Lias: Journal of Early Modern Intellectual Culture and its Sources
Call for Special Issues and Articles
Lias: Journal of Early Modern Intellectual Culture and its Sources invites submissions of research articles and special issue proposals in the broad field of early modern cultural and intellectual history. Established in 1974, Lias is a peer-reviewed journal published by Peeters Publishers and indexed in leading scholarly citation indexes, including the Arts and Humanities Citation Index, Scopus, and ERIH PLUS. Aimed at providing a venue for innovative scholarship on early modern cultural and intellectual history, we invite contributions on all aspects of the history of knowledge and learning from the early Renaissance in the 14th century to the late Enlightenment in the 19th century. Studies exploring these topics in relation to early modern political, social, religious or art history, or applying novel perspectives and methodologies to these fields are particularly welcome. Although focused primarily on research articles, Lias is also open to the publication of transcriptions, editions, and commentaries of original unpublished sources relating to early modern cultural and intellectual history.
Aside from individual papers, Lias welcomes proposals for special issues relating to the broad field of cultural and intellectual history. Over the previous years, special issues in Lias have addressed diverse topics, including Astrology in French Learned Communities (Lias 2020.2), the role of Ottoman Scholarship in Shaping Early Modern Oriental Studies (Lias 2019.2), and Early Modern Irish Abroad Colleges (Lias 2022.1).
Proposals for special issues should contain the following:
- A brief description of the special issue’s main theme (500-1,000 words), highlighting its significance for early modern cultural and/or intellectual history
- Abstracts (100-200 words) of the articles to be printed in the special issue. A typical special issue in Lias contains 4-7 articles of 8,000-10,000 words
- Two-page CVs of the guest editors and short biographies (100-150 words) of the contributors
Submissions are preferably written in English, but Lias is also open to contributions in French. We have a longstanding tradition of publishing editions of and research on early modern source texts in a wide range of original languages, including Latin, Greek, French, English, Dutch, German, Hebrew and Arabic.
After submission, all manuscripts go through a process of double-blind peer review by at least two reviewers, followed by author’s revisions and copy-editing.
