This workshop aims to explore the application of AI in historical research. Hosted at the History Department of the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg, this event will bring together graduate students and experts in Digital Humanities to discuss the integration of AI in historical research and writing. The workshop will delve into the advantages, complexities, challenges, and boundaries associated with employing AI-based tools in historical research. Through discussions and presentations, participants will share insights, challenges, and potential solutions.

AI in History

Advanced master, doctoral stundents and graduates working with or interested in AI and digitial tools in historical research and writing are encouraged to apply for participation.

A digital “handbook” will be developed as a lasting outcome of the workshop: https://aiinhistory.hypotheses.org/.

This resource will provide a comprehensive overview of ongoing projects, tools, and methodologies of AI in history, serving as a forum for addressing challenges and fostering ongoing discussions.

Programm

Day 1: Expert lectures followed by discussions among all participants. A public lecture in the afternoon. After the public lecture, there will be a guided walking-tour around Heidelberg and a common dinner.

Day 2: Participant presentations on AI applications or challenges in their projects, followed by discussions. Afternoon sessions for idea generation for the creation of a digital handbook.

This event is generously funded by the Charles University 4EU+ Student Mini-grants 2024 (https://4euplus.eu/4EU-730.html). The grant covers all workshop provisioning and common dinners. Participants from 4EU+ universities will be eligible to apply for partial coverage of their travel expenses.

The application deadline is 15th of July 2024, and it should include a brief CV, a description of the participant's project as well as a short reflection on how the project might benefit from using AI.
