RESEARCH IN AFRICAN STUDIES AND SOCIETIES
Where does research start and end? What impact can our research have on societies in the face of great transformations such as pandemics, rising inequalities, climate change, conflict and violence? How do we relate to society as early career researchers? What do African epistemologies and cosmologies tell us about transformations in Africa and reconfigurations in African studies?
The central theme of the Young Scholars Forum, which corresponds to the VAD 2024 conference theme, "RECONFIGURATIONS IN AFRICA - AND IN AFRICAN STUDIES," addresses the intersections of research on Africa and African Studies with African societies. We bring together early career scholars, researchers, practitioners, and artists to discuss the interlinks between research, 'activism' and 'civil engagement' in African Studies.
This year's edition of the Young Scholars Forum (YSF) combines academic exchanges in a hybrid format with expert engagement, interactive sessions, and the opportunity to connect and network with others. With this approach, we aim to facilitate an open and interactive space for learning and exchange for Early Career scholars, activists, and practitioners who centre Africa in their work.
The Keynote address titled ‘Knowledge and the Picket Line’ will be delivered by Professor Nomusa Makhubu, an artist, curator, and academic working broadly in popular culture, arts, and social engagement.
We welcome attendance from all over as we seek to create a community and establish networks of support for Early Career scholars on their respective academic journeys.
Activities also include a world cafe and a social gathering in the evening.
