As a part of the congress we, professor George Schoepflin (London) and Dr. Heino Nyyssoenen (Jyvaeskylae), will organise a symposium "Hungary: Politics and Society" (Politika es tarsadalom Magyarorszagon). This is a call for papers to deal, one way or another, with politics and society in Hungary.

We understand politics widely, a cultural and historical phenomenon and also as a part of everyday life. Papers could focus on the present Hungarian democracy and its current problems. However, we do not exclude a discussion on politics and society during earlier periods, thus like Austria-Hungary, Horthy or the communist era.

Particularly we expect papers dealing with symbolic and rhetoric dimension of politics. Among party politics, characters and peculiarities of political culture are welcome. So are papers concerning Hungarian political thought including themes like nationalism, national symbols or media.

Send your proposal, not more than one page to Heino Nyyssoenen (hnyysson@dodo.jyu.fi or heino@mail.matav.hu) before August, 31st, 2000 (postal address below). Do not forget to add your address including your e-mail.

Official languages of the congress: English and Hungarian. See also general information from the congress: internet:
