The international conference “Taking part in Art and Culture. Practices, Theories and Policies in today’s Cultural Mediation” is focusing on the issue of “participation” (see CFP enclosed). We will be looking into the ways in which it has evolved (notably since the 1970s) in the cultural field and in which it influences the role of cultural mediation today.

The conference presentations will follow three main axes:
1) The genealogy of participatory mediation practices (notably interrogating the role of cultural mediation in the educational turn in curatorial practices)
2) Mediation and cultural rights (questioning the influence of the increasingly important topic of cultural rights on the conception, interpretation and reception of the collective cultural and artistic heritage)
3) What teaching cultural mediation and training cultural mediators means or (could mean) today.

The purpose of this conference is to present an overview of these issues through the particular prism of the posture of mediators, a posture that may be characterised as paradoxical, notwithstanding its precarious status in the cultural field. Mediators are the depositaries of the link existing between the public and artistic or cultural offers, and their voice can never be captured as the voice of the public, the voice of artists, nor even as the voice of their employing structures. Their ceaseless engagement is therefore to struggle out of the confining roles that may result from this posture, because these roles give foundation to an order of things they precisely attempt to abolish. In this order of things, figures of exteriority are constructed within the walls of institutions, and embodied by members of the public who are labeled as unadapted to cultural spaces.

The conference will take place in Marseille (France), in Aix-Marseille University and at the Tiers QG of Manifesta 13, from October 22nd to October 24th 2020.

Le colloque international « Prendre part à l’art et à la culture. Pratiques, théories et politiques de la médiation culturelle aujourd’hui » (dont vous trouverez l’appel complet en PJ) s’intéresse à la question de la « participation » dans le champ culturel, aux facteurs de son évolution (notamment depuis les années 1970) et à la façon dont elle interroge le rôle de la médiation culturelle.

Les communications du colloque s’articuleront autour de trois axes principaux :
1) Généalogie des pratiques de médiation participative (questionnant notamment le rôle de la médiation culturelle dans le tournant éducatif au sein des pratiques curatoriales)
2) Médiation et droits culturels (interrogeant l’influence grandissante de la question des droits culturels sur la conception, l’interprétation et la réception du patrimoine artistique et culturel collectif)
3) Enseigner la médiation culturelle aujourd’hui. Quelle place pour la discussion des enjeux actuels de la médiation dans la formation des médiateurs·rices ?

Ce colloque a pour objectif de poser l’ensemble de ces problématiques au prisme de la posture du·de la médiateur·rice, posture que l’on pourrait qualifier de paradoxale, au-delà même de la précarité de son statut dans le champ culturel. Dépositaire du lien entre des publics et une proposition artistique ou culturelle, sa parole n’est jamais tout à fait assimilée ni à celle des publics, ni à celle de l’artiste, ni même à celle de la structure qui l’emploie. Il·elle doit alors lutter sans cesse pour échapper au rôle dans lequel cette posture particulière menace de l’enfermer, celle de garant·e d’un ordre des choses qu’il·elle cherche précisément à abolir, participant à construire, depuis l’intérieur des murs de l’institution, une figure de l’extériorité, celle de publics jugés inadaptés à l’espace de la culture.

Le colloque aura lieu à Marseille, dans l’espace « Turbulence » d’Aix-Marseille Université et au Tiers QG de Manifesta 13, du 22 au 24 octobre 2020.
