On behalf of the Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography, the Centre for Area Studies and the Centre for the History and Culture of East Central Europe at the University of Leipzig, we would like to extend you an invitation to the First Annual Conference of the Collaborative Research Centre (SFB) 1199: “Processes of Spatialization under the Global Condition”. Under the title “Spatial Formats: Concepts, Historicity and Approaches towards Typologies”, an interdisciplinary and international group of renowned scholars will meet in Leipzig (Germany) between 6–8 October 2016.

Being composed of 17 projects, a central project and an Integrated Research Training Group, the SFB 1199 is based on a wide spectrum of area studies as well as disciplines in the social sciences and humanities. Introducing the two main categories of spatial formats and spatial orders, the SFB 1199 develops a systematic approach that establishes a typology of spatial formats as well as a historical narrative about the change of spatial orders under global conditions.

This First Annual Conference of the SFB 1199 brings together expertise from different disciplines and world regions in order to discuss and test the conceptual proposal of spatial formats and approaches. In turn, the outcome of this fruitful gathering of scholars will help in developing a valuable typology. Addressing both German and international academia, the conference represents one of the key arenas in which the research programme of the SFB can be discussed with a wider and interdisciplinary academic community.

Divided into six main panels on topics ranging from methodological and conceptual issues to geographical and cartographical approaches to globalization, the 2016 conference also features two keynote lectures by Bob Jessop (Lancaster) and Glenda Sluga (Sydney).

While there is no conference fee, for organizational matters we would be appreciative of a short note of your intention to attend.
