Why is nuclear energy highly controversial in some countries and not in others? How have societies engaged with nuclear energy? How has the nuclear energy sector engaged with societies, and how this has changed over time? And how can we conduct research on these issues in a systematic manner? These are some of the the questions, the Barcelona HoNESt “History of Nuclear Energy and Society” Summer School will address.
The Barcelona HoNESt - Summer School is a one-week intensive interdisciplinary training programme for junior researchers broadly interested in the relations between technology and society. Benefitting from the expertise and experience of historians and social scientists from leading European research centres collaborating in the large Horizon 2020 research project HoNESt, provides a concise introduction into a diversity of state of the art approaches. This includes approaches from the history of science and technology, STS, social and economic history, the study social movements, social sciences, notably engagement studies.
Young researchers will be able to meet leading experts in the field, to engage with a diversity of relevant methodological approaches, and, most importantly, will be able to present their own work, and obtain feedback from leading experts in the field.
The Summer School also offers the unique opportunity for young researchers to get first-hand insights into a large European interdisciplinary research project, including the practice of stakeholder engagement, an issue that becomes ever more important in European projects.
Each day of the summer school will be devoted to a different topic – including the transnational responses to nuclear installations sited at national border, the economics of nuclear energy, nuclear’s role as a public technology, the juxtaposition, and social science approaches, from STS and engagement studies. Time in the afternoon is set aside for the discussion of participants’ own research.
All courses and sessions are taught in English, by world leading expertise.
The Barcelona HoNESt Summer School is offered by the Horizon2020 HoNESt Project (http://www.honest2020.eu), coordinated by the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, in Barcelona.

We are inviting applications from junior researchers (PhD students, young postdocs, researchers new to this field). Applications should include a brief (100-200 words) description of the applicants’ current research, a short CV (200 words), and should be sent to: Marta Perelló (marta.perello@upf.edu).

Deadline: 31 july 2017

Participants will have cover their own accommodation and travel cost. The summer school will provide a list of options for accommodation.
