Digital methods and data are increasingly shaping research in the social sciences and the humanities. Research activity is evolving and increasingly incorporates digital tools and methods. As a result, the demands on the management of the digital data material and software tools used and created in the research process are also increasing. Researchers have to meet requirements for long-term archiving, transparency, open access, and re-use of data as well as for the protection of the privacy of respondents, intellectual property of data creators, and copyright restrictions. The diversity of methods and research questions in the humanities and social sciences renders “one-fits-all“ approaches impossible, but rather requires tailor-made solutions for research data management.

To discuss these and related issues, we invite interested scholars to a workshop which will take place from 7 to 8 October 2019 in Moscow. Travel expenses and accommodation costs of invited participants will be covered by the organisers.

The major aim of the workshop is to facilitate an exchange about problems and solutions in research data management and regarding the application of digital methods in the humanities and social sciences with an emphasis on research about the post-Soviet region. The workshop is being organised by the Discuss Data project (https://www.discuss-data.net/) (a collaboration between the Research Centre for East European Studies at the University of Bremen and the State and University Library, Göttingen, funded by the German Research Foundation DFG) in cooperation with the German Historical Institute, Moscow (www.dhi-moskau.org), and the Centre for Digital Humanities at the National Research University Higher School of Economics, Moscow (https://hum.hse.ru/en/digital/).

In particular, we are looking for presentations on the following topics:

1. Research projects on the post-Soviet region from humanities or social sciences disciplines using innovative digital approaches
2. Best practices, solutions and open questions concerning the creation, openness, and reusability of humanities and social sciences research data and respective software tools
3. Implications of using digital tools and data driven methods for research in the humanities and social sciences with an emphasis on the post-Soviet region

Please submit an abstract of your proposed workshop presentation (max. 300 words) and a brief CV by 21 April 2019 to: felix.herrmann@uni-bremen.de

Participants are not expected to prepare full papers in addition to their workshop presentations.
