The Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies (MPIfG) provides an attractive research environment for talented postdoctoral fellows. It offers up to five postdoctoral fellowships a year to researchers of all nationalities. Fellowships are awarded for one year with an option to extend for a second year under certain conditions. During their tenure, fellows are expected to reside in Cologne and participate in the intellectual life of the institute. Postdoctoral fellows may do research on a topic of their choice in the fields of economic sociology, political economy, or contemporary history. Their projects must relate to the substantive concerns of the institute’s research program.

The MPIfG conducts basic research on the governance of modern societies. It aims to develop an empirically based theory of the social and political foundations of modern economies by investigating the interrelation between economic, social, and political action. Building on a long tradition in sociology and political science, the institute’s research program aims to combine and develop the approaches of new economic sociology and comparative political economy.
Projects at the institute are clustered in four research areas:
––
Sociology of Markets
––
Political Economy of European Integration
––
Transnational Diffusion of Innovation
––
Economization of the Social and the History of Complexity
Awards are made on the basis of scholarly excellence and a research proposal outlining a project to be pursued at the MPIfG. Stipends are based on the fellowship guidelines of the Max Planck Society, usually 2,100 EUR per month for fellows from abroad. They are not subject to income tax or social security contributions.
Please submit your application for admission to the MPIfG Postdoctoral Program online: www.mpifg.de > Research > Postdoctoral Program. You may apply as of November for a fellowship starting in October of the following year. The deadline for applications is January 31, 2015. Awards will be made and applicants notified in April.

The Max Planck Society is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to improving opportunities for women in science.
