The Zentrum für Holocaust-Studien am Institut für Zeitgeschichte (Center for Holocaust Studies at the Institute of Contemporary History Munich) and the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum are pleased to announce support for an exchange of scholars-in-residence. This exchange is designed for PhD candidates, early postdoctoral researchers, and junior faculty members for the purpose of furthering German-American partnership and commitment to cutting-edge Holocaust-related research.
Applicants to the Center for Holocaust Studies at the Institute of Contemporary History (Germany) must be US citizens (or green-card holders) based at US institutions or universities and working on a Holocaust-related subject who wish to spend up to four months at the Institute of Contemporary History (in Munich and/or Berlin) during the 2016 calendar year. Applicants to the Mandel Center (United States) must be German scholars based at German institutions or universities and working on a Holocaust-related subject who wish to spend up to four months at the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies in Washington, DC, during the 2016 calendar year.
Proposals are welcome from scholars in all relevant disciplines, including history, political science, literature, Jewish studies, philosophy, religion, psychology, comparative genocide studies, law, and others. Applicants must be PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, or junior faculty who received their PhD in 2011 or after and must be enrolled in or faculty or staff of a degree-granting academic or advanced research institution. Applicants in transition between appointments must provide a detailed explanation.
US applicants should demonstrate a need to utilize the extensive holdings of the Institute of Contemporary History and other important archives in Berlin and/or Munich. Successful applicants are expected to participate in research and discussion groups and to deliver a lecture on their research at the Center for Holocaust Studies. German applicants should demonstrate a need to utilize the extensive holdings of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Successful applicants are expected to participate in the scholarly life of the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies and to deliver a lecture on their research to Center staff and fellows.
Each institution will provide work space and access to a computer, telephone, and photocopier. Stipends range up to $3,200 per month (and up to the equivalent amount in euros, for American scholars) for the purpose of defraying local housing and other miscellaneous living expenses. Awards include a one-time stipend of $1,200 to offset the cost of direct travel to and from Germany or Washington. Successful applicants are responsible for securing their own accommodations and health insurance. The award does not include support allowances for accompanying family members.
APPLICATION PROCESS
Applications may be submitted in English or German and should include:
- A project proposal, not to exceed five single-spaced pages, demonstrating the need to use the resources available at the Institute of Contemporary History or the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
- A curriculum vitae (CV) that includes a full list of publications to date.
- Two signed letters of recommendation that speak to the significance of the proposed project and the applicant’s ability to carry it out.
