The Institute of History of the University of Bern (Chair of Modern History) offers a one year Research Fellowship in Modern History, either on predoctoral (75%) or postdoctoral level (50%). Salary range: 3100 to 3600 CHF per month (depending on work experience). The post will give the Fellow the opportunity to prepare and submit a proposal for a research grant to the Swiss National Science Foundation or another funding body. Successful applicants are expected to conduct their project at the University of Bern. The Fellowship will be tenable for a period of 12 months starting on 1 February 2018 or a later date on mutual agreement.

Requirements

The successful PhD candidate holds a Master’s degree or equivalent in modern, world, or imperial history, or in area studies. The candidate for the post-doctoral position holds a PhD in one of these fields. An interest in social historical approaches to world and imperial history is desirable. It is expected that the successful candidate will live in the Bern area during the tenure of the Fellowship. German and English language skills are welcome.

Responsibilities

Besides submitting a research proposal the candidate is expected to assist in the preliminary work for the organization of an international conference in global social history which will take place in 2019 or 2020 at Bern. Postdocs are further expected to teach one course of two hours per week for BA students in history during the fellowship.

The salary will be defined by taking into account the candidate’s work experience according to the salary scale of the Canton of Bern. Work space will be provided. The successful candidate will benefit from an inspiring research atmosphere at both the Chair of Modern History and the Institute of History. In addition, the Center for Global Studies offers excellent opportunities for the interdisciplinary study of past and contemporary processes of globalization.
