The Faculty of Social Sciences at Nord University has vacancies for eight temporary PhD positions. These positions are linked to the Faculty’s four research groups. Successful candidates will need to be admitted to the Faculty’s PhD in Sociology.

Two PhD positions in the Leadership and Innovation research group

This research group is looking for PhD projects on the cutting edge between sociology and organisation/management theory. Applicants are asked to submit a project description which addresses the field covered by this research group and describes a PhD project which is based on the key changes being faced by Norwegian workplaces such as the climate, gender and migration and which focuses on how such changes in our surroundings create new conditions for leadership and organisation at business level.

Two PhD positions in the History, Culture and Media research group

This research group wants PhD projects to be linked to historical sociology and/or cultural and media sociology. Priority will be placed on projects which fall under the following areas: 1) Media, Democracy and Freedom of Expression, 2) War and Extremism, 3) Global History.

Two PhD positions in the Environment, International Relations, Northern Areas and Civil Protection (MINS) research group

This research group wants projects related to environmental sociology and security research. Priority will be placed on projects which fall under the following areas: 1) Urban/Local Communities in the Transition to Climate-friendly Communities, 2) Security and Restructuring in the Northern Areas.

Two PhD positions in the Welfare and Social Relations research group

This research group wants PhD projects to try and make a contribution towards the development of social work, both as a theoretical subject and as practical professional practice. Consequently projects must be aimed at key topics or service areas in the field of social work. It is desirable that project descriptions clarify the challenges and development opportunities which exist in respect of social work and demonstrate how the project in question will contribute to the development of social work as a subject.

For all positions, the period of employment is normally three years, with no work requirements. The two positions associated with the Welfare and Social Relations research group can be changed to a 4-year position with a 25% teaching obligation linked to the Child Welfare and Social Work Bachelor’s programmes if the successful candidates have specific teaching requirements in respect of these programmes.

The positions are to be located in Bodø or Levanger. Compulsory residence is required for these positions.

The applicant must hold a Master's degree in social science (e.g. Master in Sociology, Master in Social Work, Master in Politics and Social Change etc.) with an average mark of B or better in the European marking system (ECTS), or corresponding to a B average if other marking system is used. The applicant must hold a satisfactory theoretical and research prerequisite for completion of a doctoral degree in sociology.
