Applications are invited for the MA in Eighteenth-Century Worlds at the University of Liverpool
The MA in Eighteenth-Century Worlds (12 months) is an interdisciplinary programme, in which students have the opportunity to draw on the expertise of staff based in English, History, Classics and Archaeology and French and German Studies. The city of Liverpool is an exciting canvas for this course, as one of Britain’s leading Atlantic ports and a city rich in eighteenth-century history, architecture and culture. We are able to draw substantially on local cultural resources to support the programme’s strengths in visual and material culture and in classical reception studies.

Against the background of this vibrant local heritage, the MA is also unusual in providing the opportunity to participate in a genuinely globally-oriented degree. Studies cover Britain and Continental Europe, Asia and the Atlantic and are not confined to one eighteenth-century world or to one discipline. Delving into the cultural, political, and social history of the long eighteenth century (1660–1832), students develop a critical awareness of the evolution of Europe, and how Asia, the Americas and Africa were connected to Europe through trade, exploration and empire building. Both core and optional modules draw attention to the physical as well as intellectual links between the many ‘worlds’ of the eighteenth century.

Partnerships with universities in France and Italy supplement the international profile of teaching and research in the programme.
Core and optional modules offered include:
- Approaches to the global 18th century
- Revolution and social change: Politics, Cultures and Societies in 18th-century worlds
- Writing Travel in the Renaissance and 18th Century
- Ancient Greece and the eighteenth century: Travellers and the (Re)discovery of Greece
- Science and Literature in Britain
- Pompeii and Herculaneum 1735-1815
