Postdoctoral Fellowship in the History of Mathematics and artisanal knowledge at the 17th century (Cohn Institute, Tel-Aviv University, Israel)

Applications are invited from historians of mathematics working on the history of mathematics and the role of artisanal knowledge during the 17th century. The position is part of the ISF-funded project (grant no. 461/21) “Expanding Geometry in the 17th century: A Migration of Knowledge from Weaving to Mathematics?”, led by Michael Friedman, at the Cohn Institute, Tel-Aviv University, Israel. The project aims to explore how material and artisanal processes and practices may have prompted the discovery of new mathematical knowledge in the 17th century, focusing on how artisanal knowledge was considered and reshaped by scholars and mathematicians during this period, as well as on how the image of geometry itself may have changed due to the encounters between the two groups.

Excellent candidates are encouraged to apply even if their work is only indirectly relevant to this project.
