The Institute of History at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zürich) invites applications for a

Doctoral position in Extra-European History.

Successful candidates are expected to write a PhD thesis in a field relating to the main research foci of the chair History of the Modern World (i.e. transnational history, the history of imperialism / colonialism and postcolonial studies) within the three years under contract. Furthermore, they are expected to support the ongoing research activities with the update of the Chair’s website, to assist with editorial work, the organization of workshops and the proof-reading of all English language manuscripts produced by members of the research unit.
The position is affiliated to the chair "History of the Modern World" (Prof. Dr. Harald Fischer-Tiné). It is tenable from May 1st , 2016, or, by arrangement, and can be extended up to three years. The salary is according to ETH regulations (Scientific employees – Fixed salary - rates 2016).
Applicants should hold an M.A. (or its equivalent) within an area relevant to the study of modern global history (18th to 20th century). Applications are welcome from applicants with a background in history and/or area studies with a focus on a non-western region (preferably the Middle East, Africa, or South East-Asia). Applicants of English mother tongue (or near-native speakers) with sound knowledge of at least one relevant non-European language, and with advanced experience in information technologies and web design are given preference.
