Project Archivist, full-time, 1 year post based in Central London

The Wiener Library is the world’s oldest Holocaust archive and the home of Britain’s largest collection of published and unpublished works, documents and photographs relating to the Nazi era. We are seeking a qualified Archivist to join the Collections Team on a one year contract starting in April 2017 to catalogue the Wiener Library’s own organisational archive.

The Wiener Library has generated its own archive since its foundation in 1933. The task for the Project Archivist is to catalogue and make accessible to the public those papers from within the Wiener Library Archive which have enduring historical value. In particular the focus will be on the Library’s early years, when it was known as the Jewish Central Information Office and its primary function was that of an information gathering/disseminating bureau, through to the transition in the post-war era to that of a research library/archive.

This post is funded by the National Cataloguing Grants Scheme.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Creating a detailed multi-level description of the material to ISAD(G) standard
Indexing the collection using an in-house thesaurus
Rearranging the archive in the new order as necessary
Noting any preservation needs
Drawing up a list of 50-70 items for dissemination purposes
Liaising with the Education and Outreach Team to plan dissemination activities
Writing regular blog posts documenting the archiving process
Providing regular progress reports
Managing and supervising volunteers

Person Specification

Essential

Graduate or post graduate degree in archive studies or equivalent experience
Experience with cataloguing to ISAD(G) standard
Fluency in German and English
Attention to detail
Ability to organise work effectively and prioritise tasks
Strong communication skills (written and oral)
Team player as well as self-motivated

Highly desirable

Ability to read Dutch
Experience of supervising volunteers
Excellent subject knowledge of the Holocaust and Nazi era

This is a fixed term post for one year with an annual salary of £25,000.
