The project “VoCAL Articulations of Identity and Empire (CALLIOPE)” at the University of Helsinki will run from March 2018 – February 2023 and is directed by dr. Josephine Hoegaerts. It is funded by the European Research Council (ERC-Starting Grant 2017). The project studies how vocal performances in parliament have influenced the course of political careers and political decision making in the 19th century. It shows how politicians’ voices helped to define the diverse identities they articulated. In viewing parliament through the lens of audibility, the project will offer a new perspective on political representation by reframing how authority was embodied - through performances that were heard, as well as those that could be seen.

The Faculty of Arts invites applications for the position of a

DOCTORAL CANDIDATE

to the CALLIOPE project for a fixed term of 4 years, starting in the fall of 2018.

The duties of a doctoral candidate are to work on his or her own doctoral thesis and to complete his or her doctoral studies. The duties also include taking part in regular team meetings, presenting his/her research at seminars and academic conferences and other tasks. Teaching tasks can account for up to 5 % of the annual working time.

The doctoral candidate will study the embodied and vocal performance of political representation and citizenship in the French representative assemblies of the ‘long nineteenth century’ (roughly from the Monarchie de Juillet to the first decades of the Troisième République), using an interdisciplinary methodological approach that can draw on, e.g., histories of the body, sound studies and performativity.

The appointee must hold a second-degree title in a relevant field, and will have to obtain the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki in the six month probationary period (unless he/she has obtained this already by the time of appointment). If the candidate does not already have the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki, it must be applied for separately in September. A solid knowledge of French is essential. Experience in archival research, parliamentary history or sound studies are an asset. The appointee must have the ability to conduct independent scientific research. The candidate should have excellent analytical and methodological skills, and be able to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary scientific community. The successful candidate is expected to have excellent skills in written and oral English.

The University of Helsinki offers a salary dependent on qualifications and work experience. The salary will be based on levels 2–4 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee shall be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. The salary will be EUR 2065–3022 per month, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and work experience. The appointment starts with a probationary period of six months.
