Inclusive societies? The integration of immigrants in Iceland
The University of Akureyri invites applications for a PhD studentship at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Applications are invited from highly qualified and motivated applicants to take up a new PhD scholarship opportunity at the University of Akureyri to contribute to the RANNIS - Icelandic Centre For Research - funded project "Inclusive societies? The integration of immigrants in Iceland". The post is fixed-term for 3 years and is to commence on September 1, 2018.

Field of work
This project investigates and compares the integration patterns of immigrants at the regional level in Iceland. It offers to examine the acquisition of sociocultural competence in the Icelandic society by immigrants, such as the acquisition in the language competence and culturally appropriate skills and behaviours, interaction with the host society and participation in the job market and education. It will also assess psychological adjustment such as well-being and feelings of satisfaction and acceptance, as well as the attitude among the Icelandic population towards immigrants and immigration.
The project leader is Dr. Markus Meckl, Professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law, University of Akureyri.

The PhD candidate will work collaboratively with the research group at the University of Akureyri to accomplish the aims of the project. The tasks of the PhD candidate include undertaking research in order to accomplish the various project goals, prepare research publications, present papers at appropriate scholarly conferences and meetings and assist with the administration of the project.

Qualification requirements
Candidates for funded PhD studentship must demonstrate outstanding qualities and be motivated to complete a PhD in 3 years. Applicants must have a Master's degree in a relevant discipline and should be able to demonstrate good skills in both written and spoken English.

Salary will be according to the current collective wage and salary agreement between the Association of University Teachers in Akureyri (FHA) and the Minister of Finances. Therefore, the salary is equivalent to 80% of a standard full-time PhD studentship position.

Appointments to positions at the University of Akureyri are made in consideration of the University of Akureyri Strategy for Gender Equality and the Act on Equal Status and Equal Rights of Women and Men, No. 10/2008.
