Sozialgeschichtliche Kommunismusforschung: Industriearbeiter in der Tschechoslowakei, der DDR und in Polen
Typical for the social environment of the industrial workers in Czechoslovakia between 1945 and 1968 are strategies of downplaying and sealing oneself off. These are examined with respect to three problem areas – shift working, factory-owned social clubs and working ethics. Those stategies did not represent a fundamental rejection of the communist regime, they were an attempt at maintaining a traditional living and working environment and at dodging or at least weakening over-bureaucratization and –ideologization of the production process by trade unions and the party. The social sphere of the industrial workforce demonstrates specific limits of communist power, and those are to be found, amoung other things, in organizational preferences of the workers which in 1968 were the starting point of an inner-trade-union reform debate aimed at reestablishing "classical" roles and resposibilities of the unions.

Arbeiter im Staatssozialismus: Ein Leitfaden in theoretischer Absicht
The interpretational approach of extending a social history of the working people to mentalities has at its core the interaction between factory environments and systemic macrostructures, the dialectics of political alignment and resistance. The ethics of a spartan life, increased output and political-mindedness in the working place meet with workers’ communities of differing levels of consolidation. Conflicts are resolved by coercion, but also by evasive tactics or strategies of negotiation and pacification. The variant enjoying the greatest sucess is the pacification of the workers by social politics, by offering greater scope for consumption. After the failure of the attempts at reform during the 1960s, this becomes the principal feature of "real socialism" in the GDR and "normalization" in Czechoslovakia.

Czech literature is something the average German reader is not aware of. To rectify this shortcoming, the "Czech library" has been initiated three years ago. Until 2008, this book series will offer a representative cross section of Czech literary life. Up to the moment, ten volumes have been published which reflect developments from the literature of the national reawakening up to contemporary drama. The inter-war republic is represented by selected works by Karel Čapek, Tomáš G. Masaryk, and two authors who are almost unknown in Germany: Milada Součková and Vladislav Vančura. Their fate links them to the years of German occupation. The horrors of this time are related in Jiří Weil’s “Leben mit dem Stern” (Living w ith the Yellow Star). Jaroslav Durchych – an exponent of modern catholic literature – takes the reader to the deserted border region of the 1950s, where his heroes do not find the paradise they expected but the problems of a past not dealt with. The latest Czech library volume is an anthology of plays by Václav Havel, Ivan Klíma, Pavel Kohout, Jachým Topol, and Milan Uhde.
