„Identität“ bleibt ein Forschungsthema

1521 überreichte Nicolas de Naves, später erster Präsident des Provinzialrats des Herzogtums Luxemburg, Kaiser Karl V. eine Chronik der Luxemburger Herrscher vom 11. Jahrhundert bis in die burgundische Zeit. Diese „älteste Gesamtschau der Luxemburger Geschichte“ (Nicolas Van Werveke, 1899) war bisher nie aus historiographischer Sicht untersucht worden. Diese Arbeit leistet hier Gilles Genot, der den Autor und sein Werk vorstellt, Letzteres unter dem Gesichtspunkt von Identitätskonstruktion(en) im 16. Jahrhundert beleuchtet und eine kritische Edition des Textes und der dazugehörenden Korrespondenz vorlegt: wahrhafte Grundlagenforschung. Die Anfänge einer nationalen Luxemburger Identität im 19. Jahrhundert hatte Pol Schock im Hémecht-Heft Nr. 4/2015 darzustellen begonnen. Im vorliegenden Heft folgt der zweite und letzte Teil seiner Arbeit, der sich mit der Repräsentation des Luxemburger Landes in der literarischen Produktion der Zeit beschäftigt und die Rolle öffentlicher Festivitäten bei der Identitätskonstruktion, vor allem in den Krisenjahren 1866-72, untersucht. Sophie Richelle interessiert sich für ein anderes Feld der Sozialgeschichte: die Vorstellungen und Erwartungen sowie das Alltagsleben der Insassen des Sankt-Johann-Hospizes in Luxemburg im 19. Jahrhundert.
In der Rubrik „Forschungsberichte“ werden eine Masterarbeit über die „Personenstandsaufnahme“ vom 10. Oktober 1941 und eine Dissertation über die Konstruktion des Luxemburger Staatsbürgers in den Schulprogrammen des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts zusammengefasst. Im Rezensionsteil der Nummer werden zehn Bücher aus den Bereichen Geschichte, Archäologie, Kunstgeschichte, Musikologie und Museologie vorgestellt, die sich mit Luxemburg beschäftigen.

Gilles GenotContinuité dynastique et conscience historique dans le duché de Luxembourg. La chronique de Nicolas de Naves (1521), S. 5 This article analyses the short chronicle De la duce de Luxembourg et conte de Chiny written by Nicolas de Naves (ca. 1472 – 1546) in 1521. The author of this historical work retraces the dynastic succession of the county (and later duchy) of Luxembourg from the 11th century (Conrad I) up to the Burgundian period (Charles the Bold). The original manuscript is lost, but four copies are known to survive. It is argued here that the emperor Charles V himself commissioned this study. To date, Nicolas de Naves is mainly known for his outstanding political career as he was the first president of the provincial council of Luxembourg. However, he should also be considered among the earliest « Luxembourgish » historians. Based on Nicolas de Naves’ text, this article also raises the question of the role of dynastic continuity in the late medieval and early modern duchy of Luxembourg in the larger context of identity constructions in the Burgundian-Habsburg state into which the duchy was incorporated in 1443.
Pol SchockImagining Luxembourg oder: Die Kunst, Beliebiges zu verewigen Konstitution nationaler Identität in Luxemburg in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts (Teil II), S. 63 This paper aims to analyse the constitution of a national identity in the middle of the 19th century. It starts (in part one) by explaining how patriotic manifestations emerged in the context of the Franco-German War. The author argues that a resolute national expression for the conservation of an independent country played a key role. Against the background of the crisis of 1866-1871, a Luxembourgish political community is fleshed out, which expressed itself through national celebrations. However, this is not a spontaneous and new phenomenon, but rather a gradual process the author calls „Imagining Luxembourg“, which made its way through several emerging institutions from the early 1840s on. Moreover, the author argues that the constitution of a national identity in Luxembourg is not an phenomenon of the elites. It is a bottom-up process backed by the middle classes and the developing “Vereinswesen”.
Sophie RichelleL’hospice par ses vieillards. Représentations et conditions d’expérience à l’hospice Saint-Jean (Luxembourg, 19e siècle), S. 89 This article examines the way elderly people presented both themselves and their daily life at the hospice Saint-Jean, e.a. the public institution reserved to accommodate the elderly in Luxembourg City during the 19th century. The text is divided in two parts. The first one looks at how the hospice was pictured by the elderly through the reading of a corpus of admission letters. The arguments used by these people to present themselves (old age, infirmity, poverty…) is considered here as the main focus, as it helps define not only their personal identity but also the place where they want to get into. Secondly, the question of “How was the hospice everyday life for the elderly?” is analysed through a corpus of varied sources. Documents on the catering of the elderly and the moving of the hospice from one building to another shed light on the living conditions inside the institution. It appears that, back then, poor elderly people were respected but, at the same time, much restricted by their condition.
