Tilburg University offers a four-year, full-time PhD position. The candidate will research into the development of legal rules and commercial practice in the theme of collateral rights and insolvency, at early-modern Frankfurt. This project explores themes that pertain both to legal and economic history.

This research is part of the CLLS-project (ERC Starting Grant 714759). This project is concerned with the interactions between academic legal doctrine and municipal law, as regarding the theme of collateral rights and insolvency. The hypothesis of the project is that academic scholarship reached high levels of consistency over the course of the early modern period, and that this process had developments in commercial practice as proxy. Other PhD-projects under the umbrella of CLLS regard early modern Amsterdam and Lyon. For more information on the project, see www.clls.eu.

Candidates have studied law or history, and are acquainted with archival research. They have reading proficiency in German and high proficiency in English.

The deadline of submission is 20 October 2017.
