Postdoctoral research fellow (Roman Egypt, 36 months) – PATRIMONIVM ERC-StG n° 716375

The project PATRIMONIVM, funded by the ERC for the period 2017-2022 and hosted by the Bordeaux Montaigne University, aims at realizing the first global study of the economic, social and political role of the properties of Roman emperors from Augustus to Diocletian. Interest in the topic has re-emerged recently, but many questions about the acquisition and use of the properties remain unanswered, particularly because no systematic survey of all available documentation has been produced since the beginning of the 20th century. The project aims at filling this gap creating the Atlas patrimonii Caesaris, a powerful online relational database of all relevant published sources (literary, epigraphic and papyrological). Texts will be encoded in EpiDoc/TEI while other XML standard, such as SNAP for prosopographical data, will be implemented in order to achieve a high degree of interoperability. A multidisciplinary and comparative study, developed through the project’s rich scientific activity (workshops, conferences), will allow to understand the role of the properties as a structuring factor of Roman economy and as a vector of human mobility, economic integration and socio-cultural transformation.

As responsible for the sources concerning Egypt, you will work within a team consisting of the Principal Investigator and 9 other research fellows. You will be responsible for translating and entering the sources in the digital Atlas patrimonii Caesaris; given the nature of the extant documentation, you will principally work on papyrological material. You will also be responsible for the historical contextualization of the sources in relation to the private and/or public landownership and to the main economic activities of the region in order to assess the origin and the economic value of the properties. You are expected to actively take part to the scientific activities of the project (workshops, conferences) and meet regularly with the PI and the rest of the team. Besides the work on the sources, you are invited to author the chapter about Egypt in the final volume about the history of the imperial properties in the Roman world.

There is no obligation of residence in Bordeaux as long as you can attend to the required meetings and conduct your work on schedule.

Deadline for applications: 16th June 2017
Start date: September 2017, but a later starting date is possible

Informal enquiries and applications (CV + Motivation letter) per e-mail to Dr. Alberto Dalla Rosa (alberto.dallarosa@u-bordeaux-montaigne.fr)
