Anlässlich des 50-jährigen Jubiläums des Instituts für die Geschichte der deutschen Juden (IGdJ) wurde die Online-Quellenedition „Hamburger Schlüsseldokumente zur deutsch-jüdischen Geschichte“ im Rahmen des diesjährigen Historikertages in Hamburg online geschaltet.
Die Online-Quellenedition, die von der DFG gefördert wird, wirft am Beispiel von ausgewählten Quellen, sogenannten Schlüsseldokumenten, thematische Schlaglichter auf zentrale Aspekte der jüdischen Geschichte Hamburgs von der frühen Neuzeit bis in die Gegenwart. Hamburg wird dabei als Brennglas für größere Entwicklungen und Fragestellungen der deutsch-jüdischen Geschichte verstanden.
Für den Ausbau der Edition sucht das IGdJ fachkundige Autorinnen und Autoren, die Interesse haben, am Beispiel einer konkreten Quelle Problemstellungen und Ergebnisse ihrer Forschungen zu präsentieren und diskutieren.
Die zweisprachige Quellenedition (deutsch / englisch) richtet sich in erster Linie an Studierende und Forschende, aber auch an interessierte Laien.
Neben der Bereitstellung der Materialien als Transkript und digitales Faksimile werden die Quellen durch Interpretationstexte in ihre historischen Kontexte eingebettet sowie durch Informationen zur Überlieferung, zur Rezeptionsgeschichte und zu wissenschaftlichen Kontroversen angereichert.
Alle bereitgestellten Materialien sind über drei Zugänge recherchierbar: über eine Karte, über einen Zeitstrahl sowie über die Themenkategorien. Die Themenkategorien werden jeweils von einem Herausgeber bzw. einer Herausgeberin betreut und durch einen Überblicksartikel eingeführt.
In den nächsten Wochen und Monaten sollen sukzessive weitere Quellen und Interpretationstexte auf der Website der Online-Quellenedition bereit gestellt werden. Hierfür werden insbesondere neue Beiträge für die Themenbereiche Demographie und soziale Strukturen, Erziehung und Bildung sowie Familie und Alltag gesucht. Vorschläge zu anderen Themen sind ebenfalls möglich. Wichtig ist ein Bezug zur jüdischen Geschichte Hamburgs.
Für die Online-Edition sollen zu den Quellen jeweils eine knappe Beschreibung (150-200 Wörter) sowie ein Interpretationstext (etwa 1.500 Wörter) angefertigt werden. Die Interpretationstexte können auf Deutsch oder Englisch verfasst werden. Als Quellen kommen Text-, Bild-, Ton- und Filmdokumente sowie Objekte gleichermaßen in Frage.
Vorschläge für Quellen und eine aussagekräftige Skizze der dazugehörigen Interpretationen, die kurz die Quelle und ihre historische Einordnung umreißen sollten, senden Sie bitte bis zum 15. Februar 2017 zusammen mit einem kurzen Lebenslauf an Dr. Anna Menny (anna.menny@igdj-hh.de). Hinweise zu den Nutzungsrechten der ausgewählten Quelle werden ebenfalls erbeten. Wir möchten explizit auch Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen und Nachwuchswissenschaftler ermuntern, sich zu bewerben.

Digital Source Edition “Key Documents of German-Jewish History”,

On occasion of this year’s 50th anniversary, the Institute for the History of the German Jews (IGdJ) published a digital source edition on “Key documents of German-Jewish History”, which was launched during the “Historikertag” (51st Biennial Meeting of German Historians) in Hamburg.
The digital source edition, which is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), illustrates central thematic aspects of Hamburg’s Jewish history from the Early Modern Period to the present. The editorial team understands Hamburg hereby as a model for broader developments and questions of German-Jewish history.
In order to extend the edition, the IGdJ is looking for scholars who are interested in presenting and discussing questions and findings from their research by using a concrete historical source.
The bilingual source edition (English / German) is mainly intended for students and researchers, but it also wants to provide insight into the subject to the interested broader public and high school students. The materials will be presented as transcripts and facsimile and will be embedded in their historical contexts with the help of interpretative texts providing information about the historical context, historiographic reception and academic controversies.
All material can be accessed via three different approaches: a map, a timeline and thematic topics. These thematic categories are supervised by editors and are introduced by an article that gives a general overview to the topic.
Within the next few weeks and months, more sources and interpretative texts are planned to be successively published on the website of the digital source edition. Therefore, we welcome articles, especially in the thematic categories Demographics and Social Structure, Education and Learning, and Family and Everyday Life. Proposals on other topics are also possible, as long as they are connected to the Jewish history of Hamburg.
A short description of the source (150-200 words) and an interpretative text (1500 words) are needed for the digital source edition. The interpretative articles can be written in German or English. Possible sources are text documents, pictures, audio documents and video sections as well as objects.
Please send proposals for sources and an informative outline of the respective interpretative article, shortly depicting the source and its historical context, by February 15th, 2017 to Dr. Anna Menny (anna.menny@igdj-hh.de). Please add a short CV. Furthermore, please provide a preliminary reference to the usage rights.
We explicitly encourage young researchers to apply.

Encounters in the ‘Game-Over Era’: The Americas in Video Games
Research done in the frame of the ‘new imperial studies’ has made it clear that in the past half century our everyday relationship to and encounters with ‘empire’ and our (post)colonial heritage have changed almost entirely. On the one hand, the contemporary experience, myths, and memories of/about empires in the former colonies has opened spaces for the colonized to record the otherwise unheard or suppressed voices from the margins. On the other hand, in the so-called metropole, unprecedented geopolitical ruptures, disruptions in the colonial economic (im)balance, and new narratives of (post)coloniality and of relating to, representing, and imagining (post)colonial identity have altered the perspectives and experiences of empire and the settings in which it is re-enacted.
The special issue Encounters in the ‘Game-Over Era’: The Americas in Video Games seeks to investigate this changed everyday experience and exposure to the colonial heritage and to the state of (post)coloniality in the present imperial ‘game-over era’ in the Americas. Submissions are sought that focus on the various medial, rhetorical, literary, and historical aspects of an increasing body of video games which deal with imperialism and colonialism in the double-continent in one way or another. While interested in the encounters between the US-American Empire and the various native American nations across the continent in video games, the CfP also greatly welcomes submissions which discuss other imperial encounters in the continent as well as between the Americas and other continents including the lasting colonial imprint of the Spanish Empire in the Americas and the colonization of British North America as depicted or debated in video games. Of special interest also are theoretical discussions of video games as media and as part of larger popular narrative networks within the frame of postcolonial studies.
The special issue views videogames as media through which events, places, and people from/in the Americas have been turned by game designers into ludic matter and made sense of all over again for the post-colonial gamer to encounter. As such, questions of interest include, but are not limited to:
- How is ‘empire’ represented in video games about the Americas and the complex, evolving entanglements it has historically spun?
- How does relating to the (post)colonial heritage in the Americas through videogames affect/reinforce/cleanse/dismiss/renew existing imperial myths and narratives in and about the Americas?
- How do gamers’ affinity to a colonial heritage (being a Colombian adolescent, e.g.) and the historical moment at which they play (e.g., in the aftermath of the election of Donald Trump as the US president) affect their relationship to imperialism/colonialism and to the various narratives which function as the games’ backdrop?
- In what ways does post-colonial studies of the Americas benefit from research on video games?
- In what ways do videogames differ from/resonate with other media such as film in depicting the (post)colonial entanglements in/of the Americas?
Following suit of the panel organized at the ENIUGH 2017 on the question of historical narratives and video games, the present CfP offers a podium to digital historians, researchers in media, cultural studies, literature, American studies, game studies, and Latin-, African- and inter-American studies, who are interested in video game cultures to discuss the potential of video games as a significant and prevalent new media, new text, and new means to narrate imperialism and to re-construct colonialism – media which remind researchers of the Americas of the necessity to reflect upon the tenacity of the (post)colonial heritage in the Americas through a new, highly popular textual field, i.e., the video game.
Please note that, in case of articles, abstracts (no longer than 300 words) should include the name, current affiliation, two-page CV, and e-mail address of the authors.
Please further note that, in case of reviews, the title should be checked with the editor prior to writing the review. Reviews should include full information on the title reviewed and could have a topic other than the book’s own title.

Arabischer Film
Während die arabische Welt aus westlicher Perspektive hauptsächlich in der politischen Berichterstattung eine Rolle spielt, bleibt die Auseinandersetzung mit dem filmischen Schaffen vergleichsweise unterbelichtet. Dabei zeigt sich der ‹arabische Film› in den letzten Jahren verstärkt international und demonstriert mit großen Filmfestivals (Abu Dhabi seit 2007, Doha seit 2009) ein gewachsenes Selbstbewusstsein. Gleichzeitig erhält er in den aktuellen Krisen und Kriegen eine ausgesprochen politische Dimension: Während Filmkollektive wie Abounaddara auf Social-Media-Kanälen zu einem wichtigen Sprachrohr der syrischen Gegenöffentlichkeit wurden, dokumentieren Handyfilme politische Bewegungen wie den Arabischen Frühling live über verschiedene Distributionswege und nehmen Einfluss auf politische Entscheidungsprozesse.
Dabei stellt sich die Frage, welche Zuschreibungen den ‹arabischen Film› überhaupt ausmachen, umfasst die arabische Welt doch diverse Ethnien, Gesellschaften und Regierungsformen. Selbst eine gemeinsame Sprache ist durch regionale, stark abweichende Dialekte nicht unbedingt gegeben. In frankophonen Studien konnte sich deshalb der Plural «les cinémas arabes» durchsetzen, der die Heterogenität des Gegenstands widerspiegelt und trotzdem an Gemeinsamkeiten einer sprachlichen und bildlichen Hochkultur, aber auch an Parallelen wie die meist koloniale Vergangenheit erinnert. Montage AV möchte diesen vielfältigen, nicht selten paradoxen Strömungen einer arabischen Filmkultur ein Heft widmen und wünscht sich Beiträge, die sich aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven mit dem Thema auseinandersetzen. Einzelstudien zu arabischen Filmemachern, zur Filmhistoriografie oder Filmindustrie sowie zu Aspekten der Kolonialisierung, Diaspora und Identität sind ebenso willkommen wie Analysen zur Rolle des (digitalen) Bewegtbildes in Demokratisierungsprozessen und den Formen der Zensur, denen es unterliegt.

Arab Cinema
The Western perspective on the Arab world tends to focus on it primarily in relation to political issues, leaving its cultural and cinematic production largely in the shadows. However, ‹Arab cinema› has become increasingly international and increasingly self-assured over the last few years, as can be seen at major festivals such as Abu Dhabi (since 2007) and Doha (since 2009). At the same time, it does have a pronounced political dimension, resulting from its context in the current crises and conflicts. While film collectives like Abounaddara have become an important organ for the Syrian oppositional public sphere in the social media, mobile phone videos have documented political movements like the ‹Arab Spring› live in various distribution channels and influenced decision-making processes.
However, it is also necessary to question what the term ‹Arab cinema› refers to, since the Arab world includes diverse ethnic identities, societies, and forms of government. Regional and highly diverse dialects mean that even a common language is not necessarily a reality. Thus, studies in French tend to speak of «les cinémas arabes» in the plural, emphasizing the heterogeneity of the object, while retaining the idea of commonalities within a highly developed verbal and visual culture as well as historical similarities, including in many cases a colonial past.
Montage AV is dedicating an issue to the diverse, often even paradoxical developments and directions in Arab film culture. We are looking for articles that deal with this topic from a variety of perspectives and would welcome studies of Arabic films and filmmakers, of film history or the film industry, of aspects of colonialization, diaspora, or cultural identity, as well as analyses of the role of (digital) moving pictures in democratization and the forms of censorship that control them.
