Call for Papers "Democracy and Dictatorship Research in the 20th and 21st Century: Individual and Organisation in Authoritarian and Democratic Social Orders" - 2nd PhD Forum of the Hannah Arendt Institute for Research on Totalitarianism at the TU Dresden e. V.

The 2nd Doctoral Students' Forum of the Hannah Arendt Institute will focus on the topic "Individual and Organisation in Authoritarian and Democratic Social Orders".

2nd Doctoral Students' Forum of the Hannah Arendt Institute

The HAIT's doctoral forums are dedicated to the field of tension of democracy and dictatorship research in the 20th and 21st centuries. After the methods, theories and perspectives were the subject of the last forum, this time we will focus on the everyday life of rule. We want to address this aspect through biographical and organisational research. For our doctoral students' forum, we are inviting young academics who are researching in these areas to present their projects. We want to look at both the micro level, e.g. through the perspective of members in mass organisations, and the macro level, e.g. through the presentation of ministries and leadership positions. We hope that in this way we can jointly illuminate the relationship between the individual and the organisation, and enter into an exchange about this field of tension through theoretical discussions and concrete case studies from history and the present.

How did/do individuals shape/shape the organisations in which they were/are active, what leeway did/do they have? And in what way did/do organisations shape/form the individuals active in them? Can self-serving actions of the various actors be discerned or also resistances to influences and practices of domination?
Of course, these questions are not limited to National Socialism and the GDR, but can be applied to the entire spectrum of societies in the 20th and 21st centuries.

In the spirit of the HAIT's last interdisciplinary doctoral students' forum, young researchers:=ines from various disciplines in the humanities and social sciences will once again exchange points in their ongoing dissertation projects. How can the interactions between individuals and organisations be described? Do the tried and tested descriptions and focal points from political, social and everyday history prove their worth, so that a new ignition of the argument about the individual seems unnecessary? Or is it necessary to pose the question of the effectiveness of the individual anew? Can this broaden the view of groups and societies? Do new sources, methods, theories and technical possibilities make it necessary to re-describe and re-examine the impact of the individual in organisations and the relationship between the individual and the organisation? If so, for what reasons and with what approaches should this be done? The following aspects should serve as guiding themes for the forum:

Continuities and breaks
At historical turning points, interactions between individuals and organisations can be observed - What is decisive in the implementation of dictatorships or democratisation? To what extent did individuals (within the scope of their personal room for manoeuvre) influence the reshaping of organisations in changing societies? Or, on the contrary, could new organisations also shape individuals and their views with regard to newly emerging forms of society? This aspect cannot be limited to the field of state organisations, but on the contrary can also be extended to political parties, the economy, the leisure sector as well as cultural and sports organisations.

Differences and similarities between town and country, big city and province
The influence of organisations on the life of the population can vary considerably between urban and rural areas. Achieving equal importance in both spaces poses major challenges for organisations. Do governmental or party organisations also reach rural areas, or do local organisations, such as associations, have a greater influence in the province? Or does the anonymous urban space offer individuals more opportunities to escape the grip of organisations?

Relationship between leadership and subordinates
What makes an organisation and its processes effective and functioning? Here we can look at different leadership styles of the management level as well as the sub-organisation of the "subordinates". What role does gender play in this? This can be applied to economic organisations, such as companies, businesses, etc., and their management levels as well as the employees and their possible affiliation to trade unions or attachment to works councils. But of course, other organisations such as political parties, with their management level and the "grassroots", as well as large sports clubs with their club or management and the members and fan groups also come into consideration here.

International perspective
The questions and complexities that have been raised so far are explicitly not to be limited to the German area. The various state-socialist societies of Eastern Europe, but of course also fascist Italy and Francoist Spain, are obvious examples. Here, the organisations and the individuals working in them can be considered both in the transition from democracy to dictatorship and vice versa. Consideration of non-European societies is also encouraged.

We invite all young researchers whose work deals with biographical and institutional history in the broadest sense to come together and discuss and exchange ideas on the issues outlined here.

The HAIT Doctoral Forum is an interdisciplinary conference. We invite doctoral students from the fields of history and political science as well as their neighbouring disciplines to submit contributions on the topic of "Organisation and the Individual" from their current dissertation projects.
