Diplomatic capitals. Transformations, (De)localizations, Legitimations since 1945

The concept of “diplomatic capital” was developed on the basis of European experience (cf. Badel, Revue historique, 2022-3, no. 703) in order to examine the particular relevance of such cities in the context of the restructuring of international relations since 1945. Diplomatic capitals are thereby set apart from international capitals (as they are not necessarily a seat of a government) or global cities. The term is aimed at, but not limited to, cities where international organisations have their headquarters, where diplomatic talks are held on the occasion of conferences of non-governmental organisations, congresses of activists or in other forums. Since 1945, they have spread to all continents, not least because decolonised states have been able to participate in the functioning of the international order in hosting such events. The workshop will look at non-European cities that were able to assert themselves as diplomatic capitals during and after the Cold War and in which the transformations of both multilateralism and the respective regional and municipal spaces after 1945 can be analysed.

The workshop is organised by Laurence Badel (Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne), Nicolas Badalassi (Sciences-Po Aix), Jürgen Finger (German Historical Institute), Anne-Sophie Gijs (UCLouvain).
