A NEW MODEL OF REGIONAL COOPERATION?
THE EU’S STRATEGIC APPROACH TOWARDS THE BALTIC SEA THE DANUBE AND THE BLACK SEA REGION

Topic and aim of the conference
At the emerging borders of the EU-27, we are witnessing a new phenomenon: member states, candidates, and Non-EU-countries are finding new ways of fruitful long-term cooperation. It is definitely one of the big challenges of the EU today to stabilize its new borders without excluding its neighbors and without the construction of new walls in Europe. The EU especially is being challenged to overcome the divide of its internal (regional) policies and external affairs. The EU’s strategic approaches towards the Baltic Sea, the Danube and the Black Sea Region can be considered as part of a process in which innovative policies are developed to extend the sphere of EU-governance. Regional cooperation projects are promoted to foster stability and welfare, but the complex socio-economical conditions in these constructed regions also carry imminent risks.
We welcome to our conference contributions that focus on opportunities and challenges of the new regional cooperation projects and encourage researchers to submit their abstracts on the following topics:
- The politics of regional governance: current affairs and initiatives
- Governance competition: the role of external actors in the regions
- Good governance and promotion of stability
- Economic integration
- The security dimension of regional cooperation (including energy security and conflict management)
- Inclusion and exclusion: identity building processes
The aim of this conference is to encourage interdisciplinary academic debate and an exchange of ideas between young researchers in the fields of politics, law, economics, environment, sociology and related disciplines.
The conference marks the first milestone in building a long-term and sustainable platform on current EU-affairs to facilitate networking, knowledge transfer and cooperative research by young scholars and experts from different regions and backgrounds.
CONFERENCE DETAILS
Target group: Young academics, policy makers and experts from the Baltic Sea, Danube and Black Sea Regions.
Date: 20 – 24 August 2010
Conference venue: Studienhaus Wiesneck of the Institute for Political Education of Baden-Württemberg (www.wiesneck.de)
Costs: 60 € including accommodation and food.
Travelling costs: Participants have to cover their travel costs themselves. The Southeast Europe Association generously provides funding for the travelling costs of three participants from Southeast Europe. Please specify if you apply for this travel grant (if you are eligible).
Submission deadline: Submissions must be received electronically by 15 June 2010.
Notification: 30 June 2010
Applications: The recommended length for abstracts is 500 words. They must be drafted in English and must connect an empirical question with a theoretical approach and concept in order to be accepted. Comparative approaches (across countries and across time) are encouraged. Applications for participation will be accepted by e-mail until 15 June 2010 and should include a short CV (1 page).
