Antiquarianism has become a major topic of research during the last decade. Still there are many areas to explore: individual scholars, specific antiquarian practices of e.g. numismatics, of dealing with inscriptions, gems etc. etc. - and especially the place of antiquarianism in the wider intellectual space of the republic of letters from the late 15th to the mid-eighteenth century. How did philology, history, connoisseurship and social concerns come together in the exchange between early modern European antiquaries? The Gotha conference will have the character of a rather informal workshop (in English language) that will provide the occasion for exchange about the state of scholarship in this area and possible directions of further research. Furthermore, it will give the opportunity to become acquainted with the Forschungsbibliothek Gotha der Universität Erfurt and its vast holdings (600.000 books, of which 300.000 are before 1800; 10.000 manuscripts, most of them unexplored).
