The conference committee invites proposals for single papers or complete session panels related to the public relations of the Cold War. The conference seeks to examine the 'selling' of Cold War-motivated policies to national audiences during the second half of the twentieth century. While increasing attention has been paid to the public diplomacy of the Cold War, less attention has been dedicated to how governments sold policies to their own domestic public. This conference aims to stimulate innovative and interdisciplinary thinking and dialogue on this topic and to reach out to new networks of interest and new publics.

Topics of exploration might include international security, globalization, communications, civil and human rights, identity, nationalism, ideology, among myriad others. Papers on any topic related to the conference theme are welcome.

Eligibility: Faculty and graduate students

Deadline: The deadline for proposals is 15 September 2011. Respond via email to hnm24@cam.ac.uk with your name, institution, title, email address, proposed paper title, a 150-word abstract, and curriculum vitae. Please put “Conference Proposal” in your subject line. The conference paper itself should be a maximum of 3000 words in length, not including endnotes and bibliography. Presentations will be limited to 20 minutes.

Conveners:
Hannah Higgin (University of Cambridge)
Mark Miller (University of Cambridge)
Martin Albers (University of Cambridge)
