In recent years political history has been rediscovered by historians. The reasons are different, depending on academic cultures and historiographical traditions. There seems to be a broad consensus, though, that studies of the political should now reach beyond the institutional arrangements of nation-states, the lobbying activities of social movements or the decision-making processes of a few leading figures. While most historians agree on this extension of scope, there is less agreement on the theoretical and methodological adjustments which are needed for writing ‘new’ political history today.

The approach of the collaborative research centre (SFB 584) “The Political as Communicative Space in History” at Bielefeld University to political history is a ‘constructivist’ one. We conceive of the political as a communicative space whose boundaries are constantly reconfigured through acts of verbal, visual, and sometimes violent, communication.

As a follow-up to the conference “Political History: Recent Trends in International Perspective” in December 2009 our collaborative research centre is holding the conference “Writing Political History Today” from 1 - 3 December 2011. After a funding period of ten years we would like to discuss our results with a group of scholars who have been engaged in rethinking political history. The aim of the conference is to compare the ways in which political history has been written in recent years, either by looking at old themes in a new fashion, or by approaching subjects which hitherto had been considered not to belong to the realm of politics.
