Berlin - New Media Configurations - Changing Societies? - Call for Papers

CALL FOR PAPERS for the international conference: New Media Configurations - Changing Societies? Current Research Perspectives on South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and North Africa on 28-30 November 2013 at Humboldt University Berlin, Institute for Asian and African Studies.

Organized by the DFG research network “Medialisation and social change outside Europe: South Asia, Southeast Asia and the Arab-speaking region”, Berlin, funded by the German Research Foundation.

Deadline for abstracts: 15 June 2013
Deadline for full papers (7-10 pages): 30 October 2013

The three-day international conference will explore the interrelationship between processes of medialisation and sociocultural change in South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and North Africa. The conference is based on the assumption that social and cultural change never originates exclusively from the media or technological innovations, but rather depends on the changing conceptions with which people adopt media technologies and integrate them in their daily lives. Besides the transregional exploration of new media configurations and changing media practices, the conference will discuss the specific economic, legal and political structures in the different local and national contexts of what is increasingly referred to as the Global South.
Confirmed keynote speakers are Prof. Maitrayee Chaudhuri, Jawaharlal Nehru University, India, and Prof. Ziad Fahmy, Cornell University, USA.

The conference program includes five panels:
Panel I: Research, Media Art and Documentary Filmmaking
Panel II: The Political Economy of Media: Politics, Ownership and Technologies
Panel III: Changing Media and Religious Renegotiations
Panel IV: Media Changing Identities: Focus on Gender and Generation
Panel V: Converging Media - Changing Practices: What is new about New Media?
