Nachwuchstagung am 20. und 21. Juli 2017 an der Ruhr-Universität Bochum, organisiert von Markus Keller und Lisa Klocke unter wissenschaftlicher Leitung von Gerhard Lubich.

The High Middle Ages (the period of time between c. 1050 and 1250) has always been a subject of debate in medieval research. Urbanisation, the separation of secular and spiritual power, statute law as well as the origins of nation-states have been traced back to the Middle Ages, or to be more precisely to the High Middle Ages. Despite the fact that profound change has taken place in that epoch, new historical studies dedicated to these phenomena have become rare. Historical research in the field of that neglected epoch therefore should be intensified which is why our colleagues from the chair for the History of Early and High Middle Ages of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum organized a conference 'Hochmittelalter. Forschen zu einer vernachlässigten Epoche' in July 2016, where new ideas and methodological approaches to investigating the High Middle Ages have been discussed.

By continuing the already established format of a conference, we would like to bring together research in the field of High Middle Ages by junior scientists and advanced students. Moreover, it seems to be very important to increase the level of internationalisation since the last conference has shown that national master narratives are still prevalent in this particular field of medieval research. For that reason, there shall be a two-day conference at the campus of Ruhr-Universität Bochum, which gives the opportunity to analyze and discuss these observations in an international context.

Against this background, we have chosen "Continuities and Changes" as leading theme. We aim to create a European panorama of the High Middle Ages detached from national master narratives and to bring together different approaches.

The application should include a short abstract (350-400 words) of your 20 to 25 minute long presentation as well as your academic CV.
We will probably bear the payment of travelling as well as accommodation expenses. For any further information do not hesitate to contact Markus Keller (markus.keller@rub.de) or Lisa Klocke (lisa.klocke@rub.de).

Please send your application via mail to the contacts mentioned above by 15th May 2017.
