Between 12 and 14 November 2018 KADOC-KU Leuven, the Academia Belgica, the Deutsches Historisches Institut in Rom, the Österreichisches Historisches Institut in Rom, the École française de Rome and the Pontifical Committee on the Historical Sciences organize an international workshop in Rome focusing on the 'Effects of World War I on the Christian Churches in Europe, 1918-1925’. Senior and junior academics and researches will present new and innovative research concerning different aspects of the main theme: churches confronted with fading and new nation states and post-war opportunities and challenges; supranational relationships, ecumenism and mission movements; humanitarism and Christian charity; religious personnel and communities facing the post-war world; Rome and local Catholic communities.

A special evening session at the Belgian Embassy to the Holy See is scheduled on Monday evening 12 November and will include a lecture by prof. Jan De Volder on his new book ‘Cardinal Mercier in the First World War. Belgium, Germany and the Catholic Church’ and a lecture by father Bernard Ardura o. praem, president of the Pontifical Committee on the Historical Sciences.
