Although the idea of “future” is usually imperceptible in the analysis of the past, normative documents contain a variety of regulations that emerge out of the problems of the time, and to solve or prevent any issue that may occur in the perceived future. However, the course of history enables us to know this “future” in a specific context and to analyze the variations of what at the time of the norm was expected from the future, and what contexts later challenged it. In this regard, the term “normative documents” alludes to any political regulation granted by an authority for its effective compliance, for instance, statements, decrees, laws, ordinances, provisions, edicts, etc. The focus proposed, which has been seldom reviewed in the historiographical field, invites us to interact with a timeline in which the future of a given context is, at the same time, the past of a context that follows it. The panel aims to analyze the validity of the discussions that took place in different moments after the enactment of normative documents, including the much later contributions of Spanish American scholars on the topic.
We present this panel within the conference "Future today / yesterday / tomorrow. Visions of Future(s) in the Americas" organized by the Department of Anthropology of the Americas of the University of Bonn.
