The Leibniz ScienceCampus (LSC) “Europe and America in the Modern World: Transformations and Frictions of Globality in Past and Present” is pleased to announce a call for applications for its Pre-Doctoral Workshop. It will take place in Regensburg, Germany, on 17 and 18 September 2019. The workshop is aimed at German and international students who have completed a Master’s degree (or are close to completing their degree) and are looking to pursue a doctoral project in a field relevant to the themes explored in the Regensburg Leibniz ScienceCampus.

The deadline for applications for the Pre-Doctoral Workshop is Sunday, 30 June 2019.

The LSC “Europe and America in the Modern World” will formally begin on 1 September 2019. It is a collaboration between the Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies (IOS) and the University of Regensburg (UR). The LSC aims to examine the history and current state of transatlantic interconnections and relations. The LSC is a multidisciplinary endeavor involving Regensburg-based researchers and international partners from North and South America, as well as Western, Eastern and Southeastern Europe. The scholars involved work within broad comparative and transregional area studies frameworks. They come from across the disciplines, including history, cultural studies, literary studies, economics and business studies, international relations, political science, and international law. We are interested in how transregional connections are constitutive of the diversity of Europe and the Americas.

We particularly welcome applications to the pre-doctoral workshop from potential doctoral researchers who are looking to develop projects that examine connections between Europe and the Americas or offer a comparative perspective on common phenomena in both areas. Regensburg offers particular expertise across the abovementioned disciplines on Eastern and Southeastern Europe, Germany and Central Europe, the Romance-speaking countries, and North America. The ScienceCampus will focus in particular on the regional and global significance of: contemporary and historical transatlantic political transformations; transatlantic trade and institutions; transatlantic cultural translations and exchanges; practices of belonging and migration; and developments in theories and methods of area studies.

The Leibniz ScienceCampus will offer support towards the cost of travel to Regensburg and provide accommodation in the city for up to three nights for those from outside the area.

- A covering letter outlining your motivation for applying to the pre-doctoral program at the Regensburg Leibniz ScienceCampus (max. 250 words – in English only)
- A short CV (in English or German)
- An abstract for a doctoral project (max. 350 words – in English or German)
- An outline of your master’s/postgraduate thesis (max. 1000 words – in English or German).
