Right wing populism has become an apparent and expanding phenomenon of the present. Nationalist claims to protect the state against waves of immigration are en vogue. Populists claim to secure national interests and to defend cultural values. The cultural Other is used to establish or to strengthen a narrative of fear. A two-day workshop at the Center for the Study of Nationalism, at the College of International Studies at the University of Oklahoma, in co-operation with Nord Universitet, Norway, will examine the interrelationship of nationalism and populism during the 20th and 21st centuries.

We invite young researchers and established scholars alike, working in history, political science, media studies, art history, sociology etc. dealing with this specific interrelation in historical or contemporary contexts. We are specifically, but not exclusively, interested in the following topics:

- Populist and nationalist semantics
- Populist and nationalist semiotics
- Populism, nationalism, and migration
- The world system within populist and nationalist narratives
- Populist and nationalist politics
- Media constructions and their impact
- Populism’s perception
- Protest movements against populism and nationalism

Proposals (max. 350 words) and a short bio should be submitted to Carsten Schapkow cschapkow@ou.edu and Frank Jacob frank.jacob@nord.no by September 30, 2019.
Limited funding to cover accommodation costs for the workshop will be available. Travel costs are to be secured through the applicant’s home institution.
