After three successful conferences in London, Prague and Salisbury, the International Bridges Group will meet next in Regensburg on August 25 & 26, 2018. This year, we will cooperate with the "Gesellschaft für Stadtgeschichte und Urbanisierungsforschung" (https://gsu-stadtgeschichte.com/) and the Chair of European History at Regensburg University. The conference will bring together historians, art historians, linguists and literary scholars, archaeologists and engineers in order to present and discuss new ideas on medieval bridges and the cities in which these bridges reside. Topics may include the construction and maintenance of medieval bridges, the evolution and growth of medieval cities with stone bridges, the iconography of statues on bridges, the functions (practical and symbolic) of stone bridges, and the types of institutions connected with medieval bridges. Bridges as a cultural heritage could be another topic: How are medieval bridges in cities today perceived, preserved, staged and marketed?
Appropriately, the focus of the meeting will be the city of Regensburg and its 12th/ 13th century stone bridge. The conference will consist of a series of papers on German medieval bridges as well as those outside of Germany. The weekend will include a tour of the city and the cathedral, and a close study of the stone bridge, its existing and non-existing towers, and the hospital attached to it.
The International Bridges Group will take care of the organisation of the conference. We have reserved a limited number of double and single hotel rooms at discounted price. These are available for nights from 24. to 27.8. on a first come basis. Since the Group gets limited public funding, there will be a conference fee of about 60 EUR.
Proposals for presentations (in English, 15 minutes) should be sent as short abstracts (not more than 500 words) to:
Dr. Jana Gajdošová: firstname.lastname@example.org (deadline 28.2.2018).
