With the recent growth of interest in the field of Pietism studies, there continues to be a desire for access to current research on the German Protestant renewal movement that began in the late seventeenth century. As more and more scholars recognize the close relationship between Pietism and transatlantic and global Christian movements, the need for scholarly insight into this rich period of religious development becomes evident.
The contributions of this volume seek to provide recent perspectives to research being done on the religious thought and life of Pietist individuals and communities. Drawing from a variety of printed and manuscript sources, this volume aids recent introductory works like Douglas Shantz’s "An Introduction to German Pietism" by offering more thorough examinations of the varieties of Pietist theological expressions. It is especially concerned with developments and transitions in Pietist thought and practice both on the Continent and in its various transatlantic forms. Contributions are not limited to the German-speaking world, but essays should take into account how German Pietism was mediated, adopted, retrieved, and/or adapted by other Christian communities. These communities reached—but were not limited to—England, Scandinavia, the Americas, Eastern Europe, and Asia. As is often the case, the intellectual and spiritual lives of Pietists were closely connected to their involvement in various networks. Research may also take into account the interplay between these various networks and Pietist religious thought. Contributions may also address those seventeenth-century religious “forerunners,” whose theologies were received and adapted by Pietists, and the influence of Pietism on later Erweckungsbewegungen and Awakening movements.

Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a double-blind peer-review process. Religions is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
