This last colloquium in the series establishes a dialogue around filmic forms that are both collective and essayistic. Filmmakers and activists show how the experiences of autochthonous communities living in situations that are marked by the extension of biopolitics and the logics of late liberalism to the living beings casts light on the future and the relations that we develop with our environment. Within this discussion, encompassing the autochthonous populations in Oceania and North America, the presentations focus on the filmic practices that document the deployment of extractive industries and its consequences on our technologies and future energy policies. Following a double movement, the presentations, discussions and the masterclasses of Karrabing Film Collective and that of Lisa Rave and Erik Blinderman interrogate the anchoring of these extractive policies in the colonial histories that have yet to be fully exhumed, and explore the alternative forms of adaptation to climate change – in short, the autochthonous futures that are also our futures.

The colloquium is part of a series of three colloquia titled “Filmic Forms and Practices of Autochthonous Struggles,” held in Paris at La Fémis, the INHA, and the EHESS on February 27–28, April 8–9, and May 2–3.

Bringing together filmmakers, activists, and researchers in film studies and social sciences, they propose a first cartography of filmic forms and practices of autochthonous struggles, particularly in North America and the Pacific region. The colloquia are organized under the auspices of the research project "For a Global Study of Filmic Practices within Autochthonous Struggles" by Nicole Brenez (La Fémis / Sorbonne Nouvelle – Paris 3), Jonathan Larcher (EHESS), Alo Paistik (EHESS), and Caroline San Martin (La Fémis). The project is hosted at La Fémis and funded by PSL Research University’s Global Studies initiative.
