In 2009 we organized the first symposium on the memory of the 1989 deportation of the Turks from Bulgaria, followed by an edited book comprising important articles dealing with political and sociological aspects of the ethnic cleansing policy after 1985 and the afterwards forced migration of 1989. All those conferences and the available studies revealed important lack of oral history memoirs of Turkish migrant men, women and children from Bulgaria, thus the lack of migrants’ representations of the whole assimilation, deportation, migration and integration experiences. The following call aims at filling up this gap in the academic literature related to the events of 1985 and 1989.

The oral stories presented during the symposium will be organized around three major periods: 1. The memories of 1985 Assimilation process: political conditions, nationalist policies, relations to the local authorities, Bulgarian-Turkish interaction, intercommunity relations, connections to Turkey and other countries, local traditions, social and economic conditions, daily experiences etc.
2. The memories of the 1989 deportation: the decision making process, the process of migration, depart and arrival.
3.The memories of return and crossborder life after 1989: political conditions, migrant integration into the local society, and social and economic life, education (schooling), connections to Bulgaria and other countries etc.

Methodology:
The symposium will focus on the oral stories presented by migrants themselves. The papers should analyze the perceptions of specific groups of migrants in different aspects and in different periods. Participants may concentrate on, for example, the children’s perception of the conditions at the schools in Bulgaria before 1989, or the experiences of woman in the labor market in Turkey after 1989. The papers based on oral history studies, published memoirs, interviews, questionnaires, archival documents are welcomed. Interdisciplinary studies grasping various fields such as sociology, historical anthropology, history and political science are especially encouraged.

The paper proposals will be selected by the scientific board of the symposium. Selected papers will be published in a peer reviewed publication.

Languages of the Symposium: Turkish and English
Paper Proposals: An abstract (200-300 words) with keywords and a short CV should be sent to: mehmethacisalihoglu@gmail.com and nerimanersoy@gmail.com
Deadline for submission of the abstracts: 30 September 2019
Evaluation of the abstracts by: 15 October 2019
