The Society for the History of War invites doctoral students and early career researchers from any discipline whose research has a connection to the study of war to submit proposals for papers on any aspect of warfare from any period.

Scholarship on the history of war has frequently been monopolised by a Eurocentric and gendered fixation on the hyper-masculine battlefield that stifled both alternative insights into the wider repercussions of war and approaches to the ways in which the history of war has been communicated. Now in its third year, the ‘New Voices in the History of War’ conference aims to stimulate innovative and interdisciplinary approaches and discussions and provide the forum to communicate exciting new research.

Potential themes may include, but are not limited to:
- Cultural and artistic depictions of warfare, including popular culture
- War, the media and ‘Public’ history
- Memory studies and the personal and collective ‘narratives’ of war
- Commemoration and memorialisation
- Material culture
- Intersectional histories (e.g. race, gender, sexuality, disability, class, religion and nationality)
- War, medicine and health
- Previously under-studied conflicts, campaigns and contributions
- War, affect, and emotions
- Destruction, reconstruction, humanitarian aid, social and environmental legacies
- Wars of ‘liberation’/ insurgency and counterinsurgency
- Military technologies, innovations, improvisations and their impact
- Conflict resolution and reconciliation
- Developments in the historiography of war

Submissions are also requested for two specific planned panels on:
- The British Army
- Writing the history of war for a non-academic audience

Anonymised abstracts of up to 300 words for a proposed 20 minute conference paper should be submitted to newvoicesconference2020@gmail.com with the text 'New Voices III Conference abstract' as the subject. The deadline for submissions is January 10 2020.

The conference will be held at The National Army Museum, London on the afternoon of Wednesday 1 July and during the day of Thursday 2 July 2020. The conference fee is £15 for members of the Society for the History of War and £45 for non-members. Details of the Society for the History of War can be found at https://www.show.org.uk/. Annual membership is £25 and membership queries should be directed to info@show.org.uk. Follow the Society for the History of War on Twitter: @SocHistoryWar. The conference hashtag is: #NVHOW20.
