Interest in history and all things “historical” is booming. Manifold attempts to re-stage or even re-live the past testify to this: from “History TV” to re-enacted battles, and to debates on a “postcolonial turn”. Claims to “take history into one’s own hand” seem unbroken.

This "désir de l'histoire" serves as starting point for an international conference on "Histories: unsettling and unsettled", organized by the “Arbeitsstselle Historische Anthropologie” at the University of Erfurt. Its focus is twofold. On the one hand the conference focusses on practices of archiving and categorizing the materials which historical research employs. Private archives, photo albums, flea markets or peoples’ attics are at issue here as much as public record offices and state archives. In a second step, the emphasis is on both literal and visual practices of representating traces and remnants of the past as histories. For instance, do comics and motion pictures offer an alternative to textual historical narratives?

The seating capacity at the conference location is very limited. We therefore kindly ask people who are interested in attending the conference to notify us at least two weeks in advance and to contact petra.meersteiner@uni-erfurt.de.
