The Point Alpha Research Institute (PARI), www.pari-geisa.org, is offering fellowships for up to six months starting 1 April 2023 as well as grants to organize seminars, workshops, and conferences.
PARI is a collaboration between the universities Fulda and Erfurt and the Point Alpha Foundation, which runs the Point Alpha Memorial at the former inner German border in Geisa. As an interdisciplinary research institute, it conducts and facilitates research as well as public debates on three overarching topics connected to its location:
- Democracy and/in the global order;
- Borders;
- The history of the Cold War and its implications for today.
PARI is inviting applications for short-term or mid-term (3-6 months) research fellowships for doctoral, postdoctoral, and senior academics from all disciplines working broadly in these three fields. The fellowships can be used to design a new research project or research application (this can also be a doctoral project), to conduct field research in German libraries and archives, or to organize a workshop related to the institute´s fields (see below). Prospective fellows are expected to work on their projects and actively engage with the scholarly community at the institute and its collaboration partners during their fellowship. While not based at PARI in Geisa, fellows are obliged to attend its internal and external events and to give a lecture as part of their fellowship. Fellows writing an application are expected to base their project at PARI or to carry it out in cooperation with PARI in case it is accepted. We specifically encourage researchers in the earlier stages of their careers to apply.
The fellowship entails a monthly allowance of 1,400 Euro/month at the PhD, 2,300 Euro/month at the postdoctoral, and 3,200 at the senior level (parents are eligible for an additional 400 Euro/month for the first and another 100 Euro/month for each successive child). Travel costs, accommodation, health insurance or other social benefits are not part of the fellowship and the fellow’s responsibility.
In addition to its fellowships, PARI also offers grants of up to 3,500 Euro to organize seminars, workshops, or conference at the institute to support the dissemination of research and knowledge transfer as well as international exchange in its research areas.
The application deadline is February 15, 2023. Decisions will be announced by the end of the month. Applications are accepted in English or German and must include a letter of interest, a project proposal of not more than 1-2 pages, and a CV including a list of publications. Please also include information on the preferred time and duration of the fellowship. (A letter of recommendation is not required.) Applications should be sent via e-mail to Tobias Becker at info@pari-geisa.org as a single pdf. For further questions about the fellowship program, please write to the same address.
