The Point Alpha Research Institute (PARI) and the Berlin Center for Cold War Studies (BCCWS) are advertising a joint fellowship for up to three months at the postdoc and senior level for April to September 2023.

Visiting Fellowship (Point Alpha Research Institute / Berlin Center for Cold War Studies)

The Point Alpha Research Institute (PARI) is a collaboration between the universities Fulda and Erfurt and the Point Alpha Foundation, which runs the Point Alpha Memorial at the former inner German border in Geisa. As an interdisciplinary research institute, it conducts and facilitates research as well as public debates on three overarching topics connected to its location: The history of the Cold War and its implications for today; Borders and Democracy and/in the global order.

The Berlin Center for Cold War Studies (BCCWS) is a joint project of the Leibniz Institute for Contemporary History Munich-Berlin, the Federal Foundation for the Study of the Communist Dictatorship in Eastern Germany and the Humboldt University of Berlin. The Center is a place of international scholarly exchange and the continuing development of historical research devoted to the Cold War. The Center carries out independent research projects and offers public lectures, conferences and workshops.

PARI and BCCWS invite applications for a joint cooperative short-term (two to three month) research fellowship for postdoctoral and senior academics working on the history of the Cold War, its aftermath, its repercussions for today and how it is retrospectively perceived, discussed in public discourse and political rhetoric and historicized. Fellows will be based at the BCCWS in Berlin. They are expected to work on their projects, to actively engage with the scholarly community at both institutions during their fellowship by attending internal and external events as well as giving a lecture as part of their fellowship.

The fellowship entails a monthly stipend (2,300 Euro/month at the postdoctoral, and 3,200 at the senior level; parents are eligible for an additional 400 Euro/month for the first and another 100 Euro/month for each successive child) as well as travel costs to and from Germany. Accommodation, health insurance or other social benefits are not part of the fellowship and the fellow’s responsibility.

The application deadline is 28 February 2022. Applications are accepted in English or German and are to include a letter of interest, a project proposal of not more than 1-2 pages, and a CV including a list of publications. Please also include information on the preferred period and duration of the fellowship. (A letter of recommendation is not required.) Applications should be sent via e-mail to Tobias Becker at info@pari-geisa.org as a single pdf. For further questions about the fellowship program, please write to the same address.
