2 Visiting Fellowships “Legacies of Communism“ for Belarussian Scholars

In order to support our colleagues from the historical profession in the Republic of Belarus who currently suffer from repression due to the struggle against the regime and for democratic freedom the ZZF would like to invite individual scholars for a stay at the institute.

The Leibniz Centre for Contemporary History, Potsdam (Leibniz-Zentrum für Zeithistorische Forschung, Potsdam, ZZF) is pleased to invite applications for two Visiting Fellowships from Belarus during the year 2021 to work within the research group “Legacies of Communism? Post‐Communist Europe from Stagnation to Reform, between Autocracy and Revolution”. The fellowships cover a period of two months. They will provide an opportunity to pursue individual research as well as to participate in the scholarly community at the ZZF and in the Berlin metropolitan area. Fellows will be part of an international team including PhD‐candidates as well as senior researchers who work on the history of late socialism and post-communism in Eastern Europe and the post-Soviet space.

Generously supported by the Leibniz Association, the interdisciplinary research network “Legacies of Communism“ with partners in six countries is hosted by the ZZF in Potsdam. It focuses on historical research of the political and social development of Eastern Europe and the former USSR from late socialism to post-communism. The project explores changes and continuities of political and social elites in post-communist countries across the 1989/1991 divide. It aims to better understand and interpret the rise of authoritarian rule in post-communist societies. In order to understand the legacies of communist rule, scholars from Ukraine, Estonia, Georgia, Poland, Hungary and Israel will contribute to the endeavor with their own projects.

The two-month fellowships will provide an opportunity to pursue individual research in the Berlin-Brandenburg area while participating in the academic life of one of Germany’s major historical research centres.

Founded in 1992, the ZZF covers a broad scope of Contemporary European History. For further information please refer to our website: https://legacies-of-communism.eu and the ZZF website at https://zzf-potsdam.de.

Eligibility:
Scholars based in Belarus are eligible (Belarussian citizenship is not mandatory). Applicants may hold a PhD, but this is not a mandatory requirement. Fields of research should be either in history or public history. Fellows are meant to conduct their own research; nonetheless preference will be given to applicants whose interests relate to the research of the network and the ZZF. Candidates are expected to be fluent in English.

Conditions:
The fellowship carries a stipend of 3.000 EUR per month. The non‐renewable funding is supposed to cover all expenses including travel, housing, and insurance. Fellows are
expected to be present (as much as the political situation and COVID-19 restrictions allow) at the ZZF for two consecutive months between March and December 2021. The ZZF will provide office space, access to the internet and its library. The institute’s library holds approx. 80,000 items and subscribes to more than 100 periodicals. Other libraries within the Berlin‐Brandenburg area provide valuable resources for the history of Central and Eastern Europe.

Visiting fellows will be encouraged to present their current project in a colloquium. The research group on “Legacies of Communism” also encourages participation in its discussion and contributions to our publications.

Application Procedure:
The application deadline is 15 January, 2021. Decisions will be announced in February, 2021.

Applications must include:

1. A letter of interest;
2. A curriculum vitae (including a list of publications);
