The Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden are awarding the three-month FELLOWSHIP SCHENKUNG SAMMLUNG HOFFMANN for the second time.
In 2018, the collection of Erika and Rolf Hoffmann has been donated to the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden. It is an internationally important private collection of contemporary art and brings together around 1,200 works of painting, photography, drawing, sculpture, installation, film and video art. Among the artists represented are Jean-Michel Basquiat, Monica Bonvicini, Marcel Broodthaers, Miriam Cahn, Tracey Emin, Isa Genzken, Félix González-Torres, Roni Horn, On Kawara, William Kentridge, Julie Mehretu, François Morellet, Sarah Morris, Bruce Nauman, Ernesto Neto, Hermann Nitsch, Albert Oehlen, Sigmar Polke, Arnulf Rainer, Ad Reinhardt, Pipilotti Rist, Thomas Ruff, Anri Sala, Frank Stella, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Wolfgang Tillmans, Cy Twombly or Andy Warhol.
The beginnings of the collection date back to the 1960s. Initially based in Mönchengladbach, later in Cologne, the Hoffmanns were closely connected to the vibrant art scene of the Rhineland and collected in close contact with artists. From the very beginning, the Hoffmanns were interested in artistic rule-breaking and border-crossing, in which an examination of the present becomes apparent. Since the death of her husband in 2001, Erika Hoffmann has consistently continued her collecting activities and expanded the focus towards Eastern Europe. The collection, which has been housed in a former sewing machine factory in the Sophie-Gips-Höfe in Berlin-Mitte since 1997 and is open to the public, will find its final home in Dresden in the next few years.
The three-month research fellowship is intended to promote research projects dedicated to the Sammlung Hoffmann, e.g. its history and conception, its collection focal points, individual works or groups of works as well as its exhibition and mediation strategies.
The call is primarily aimed at graduates (Master's or Diplom), doctoral candidates and postdocs in art history, cultural studies and other humanities disciplines. Research projects in the artistic-scientific field or from restoration and material science are also possible.
The research fellowship is endowed with 2,000 euros gross per month (plus a subsidy for accommodation and travel costs amounting to a maximum of 800 euros) and is to be completed in the course of 2021 in Berlin or Dresden (depending on the research project). The exact date of the scholarship can be chosen by agreement. The research results (in German or English) are to be made available to the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden at the end of the fellowship in the form of a publishable essay (35,000 characters) that takes into account the standards of scientific work. A digital publication of the results is planned by the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden. Furthermore, the research results are to be presented within the framework of an (online) event, the conception and implementation of which is the responsibility of the scholarship holder. The venue for an analogue event is Dresden or Berlin.
The applications will be evaluated by a jury. After selection, a contractual agreement will be concluded between the scholarship holder and the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden.
Application documents: Curriculum vitae in tabular form, copies of relevant certificates, max. 4-page exposé on the research project and its implementation.
Please send application documents as a PDF (and any queries) by 15 February 2021 to:
