The Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology is one of the leading centres for research in social anthropology. Common to all research projects at the Max Planck Institute is the comparative analysis of social change; it is primarily in this domain that its researchers contribute to anthropological theory, though many programmes also have applied significance and political topicality.

Your Profile
Applications should be focused on one or more of the V4 countries, or the neue Bundesländer of Germany. Projects that engage with themes in the following broad categories are particularly encouraged: classification, state practices, local level solidarities; gender, sexuality, reproductive rights; migration; minorities; gender, sexuality, reproductive rights; political language, ideologies; religion and secularization; temporality, history, memory, silences. Applications addressing other themes will also be considered.

Good research skills, the ability to work in a team, and communication skills with good written and spoken English are required. Applicants should have completed their dissertation in social anthropology or a related discipline before the designated starting date.

Our Offer
Postdoctoral scholarships are awarded for up to two years. There are no teaching requirements. Field research can be supported in the usual way; unless the researcher is embarking on an entirely new project involving a new language, it is anticipated that the duration of the fieldwork will be shorter at this level – generally not more than 6 months.
