The Department of German Studies at the University of Cincinnati is pleased to announce that it will offer competitive scholarships for MA and PhD students for the 2019-20 academic year.

Application Deadline: January 15, 2019

The Department of German Studies at the University of Cincinnati specializes in the fields of media and cultural studies. The program offers highly qualified students the opportunity to undertake interdisciplinary studies in Film, Media & Cultural Studies, Gender Studies, Jewish Studies, and Cultural and Intellectual History within a German Studies framework. We cooperate closely with cognate disciplines in order to foster truly interdisciplinary work.

Our program is project-based and emphasizes experiential learning. The graduate curriculum allows for students to gain practical experience and master skills that can be the springboard for careers both inside and outside of academia. Training in research and teaching remain central to our program, but students also develop skills in curating exhibits, managing events, organizing film screenings, and working with campus and community organizations.

As an internationally-renowned program with a distinguished history in German Studies that stretches back well over a century, we offer our students the ability to study in an environment in which they can work closely with faculty and colleagues on individual research projects and train as university instructors leading undergraduate courses in the department. Recent graduates have gone on to successful careers as university faculty, secondary school teachers, museum curators, and other intellectually-stimulating and fulfilling fields.

UC German has close connections to national and international institutions in order to offer students the opportunity to take part in transatlantic partnerships and build international networks. Our annual Transatlantic Seminar in collaboration with the University of Duisburg-Essen brings students and faculty from both institutions together for an intensive topic-based seminar alternately set in Cincinnati and the Ruhrgebiet. Highly motivated students have the possibility to achieve a dual PhD awarded from both the University of Cincinnati and the Universität Duisburg-Essen

We encourage students to diversify their studies by earning certificates in fields such as Museum Studies, Film & Media Studies, European Studies, and Women’s Gender and Sexuality Studies.
