The DFG Collaborative Research Centre “SFB/TRR 138: Dynamics of Security. Types of Securitization from a Historical Perspective", a cooperation of the Philipps University Marburg, the Justus Liebig University Giessen and the Herder Institute for Historical Research on East Central Europe, Marburg (Germany), is pleased to offer two visiting fellowships for excellent young researchers. The fellowships are available for a period of three to six months, starting in either February or March 2020.

Research Programme
The Collaborative Research Centres are institutions established at German universities for a period of up to 12 years that enable researchers to pursue an outstanding research programme, crossing the boundaries of disciplines. Within the context of the “SFB/TRR 138: Dynamics of Security. Types of Securitization from a Historical Perspective", 60 researchers are investigating how diverse conceptions of security have been developed throughout history, how they found their way into politics and turned into particular policies. The SFB/TRR focusses on the creation and institutionalization of security as an interdependent, dynamic processes. Building on the approach of the Copenhagen School in the field of International Relations, the SFB/TRR conceptually terms these dynamic processes “securitization”, and seeks to deepen and broaden the approach by including and reflecting on the historical perspective. The SFB/TRR does not adhere to any particular underlying, static definition of security: security, understood as a historically changeable and varying concept as mentioned above, is regarded as a societal construct, the object of competing interpretations, interests and practices. In line with this approach, the research centre does not focus on a specific time-period but takes various epochs and different cultural contexts into account. Gender, race, and other categories of difference as well as intersectionality are key issues within the scope of several sub-projects of the centre.

Fellowships
The fellowships are aimed at late-stage doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers. We offer a monthly grant of € 1,600 for doctoral candidates and € 2,300 for postdoctoral researchers (tax-free, accident insurance cover; health insurance is, however, not included), as well as a travel grant for traveling expenses to and from Marburg/Giessen at the beginning and end of the stay. Visiting fellows are expected to contribute to the discussions and activities of our graduate school and to participate actively in workshops and seminars. This will also include a presentation of their research in one of the seminars. The foci of this year’s fellowship are gender, difference, and intersectionality, and correspond to the agenda of recent Critical Security Studies. Applicants should possess expertise in Gender and/or Intersectionality Studies, and their current research should be centred upon these fields.

The programme is mainly affiliated with the department of history, but applications from political science, sociology, philosophy, art history, law, and economics are equally encouraged.

Applications
Applications should be in English or German and should state to what extent the applicant will profit from the interaction with our research centre, and vice-versa. The application should include (a) a letter of motivation, (b) a CV (including publications and language skills), (c) copies of academic diplomas, (d) a short description (maximum of three pages) of the research project in progress, and (e) a testimonial letter from one university professor (for doctoral candidates this should be a thesis supervisor).
