Visiting Assistant or Visiting Associate Professor History

a) Length of initial appointment, renewability:
Two-year term, with the possibility of renewal for an additional three years.

b) Status of the appointee (assistant guest professor, associate guest professor, guest professor):
Depending on rank, Visiting Assistant or Visiting Associate Professor in the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University.

c) Disciplinary field and areas of specialization and sub-specialization preferred:
As we hope to attract the broadest possible pool of candidates, we would be very happy to host a professor possessing a doctorate in Political Science, History, Sociology, or Cultural Studies.
Preferred Area of Specialization/Sub-specialization: contemporary Germany, or Germany and Europe. We are especially interested in a professor who can teach courses in one or more of the following areas: environmental studies, science and technology, security, energy, immigration, or trade.

d) Desired qualifications of the DAAD Professor:
We will give preference to candidates who have a proven track record in research and in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

e) What is the regular course load the DAAD Professor will be expected to carry per academic year?
The course load will be the same as for regular faculty members: two courses per semester, for a total of four courses. The DAAD Professor will receive a one-course reduction in teaching load during the first semester of the appointment.

f) To what extent will research focus and academic specialization of the DAAD Professor be given weight in designing course topics? To what extent will the DAAD Professor be expected to teach within an established curriculum? What are likely course topics to be assigned to the DAAD Professor?
It is not our intention to ask or require the DAAD Professor to teach pre-existing courses (i.e., to fill out an established curriculum). It is possible, depending on the qualifications of the DAAD Professor, that s/he would be asked to teach one of the MAGES core courses; even here, though, the content and format of the
core seminar would be largely up to the DAAD Professor to determine. Generally speaking, the research focus and academic specialization of the DAAD Professor will factor heavily in the designing of course topics.

g) Will courses taught by the DAAD Professor be eligible for cross-listing with other units of the host
institution?
Yes.

h) Ratio and level of graduate and undergraduate courses the DAAD Professor will be expected to teach:
It is expected that (at least) two of the four courses will be graduate level seminars, which meet one time per week for two and a half hours. The other (up to) two courses typically will be at the undergraduate level, one lecture course (meeting 2-3 times/week) and the other a seminar (meeting one time/week), for a
total of 150 contact minutes per week.

i) Estimated number of students expected to enroll in the courses taught by the DAAD Professor:
Graduate Seminars: 6-18 students/seminar
Undergraduate Seminar: 12-18 students/seminar
Undergraduate Lecture course: 20-30 students/course

j) Additional duties and activities expected of the DAAD Professor within and outside the university (e.g., local and regional outreach activities, fostering of a more productive relationship with German institutions and the German scholarly community):
In addition, the DAAD Professor will have many opportunities to connect with extensive and vibrant academic, cultural, and policy networks within the Georgetown University community and in the broader Washington DC area. It is our sincere hope that the DAAD Professor will avail her- or himself of these rich
opportunities.
The Center has a close working relationship with the German Embassy and would encourage the DAAD Professor to seek out opportunities to collaborate with the Embassy in offering events that could be of interest to academic and student audiences.

In addition to the local salary of the employing university, DAAD lecturers receive attractive financial support. The equalisation allowance consists of domestic and international components and is based on the salary abroad in accordance with the Federal Salaries Act.
