Am Institut für Theater-, Film- und Medienwissenschaft, Fachbereich Neuere Philologien, der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main sind zum 01.07.2020 im Rahmen des von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft geförderten Graduiertenkolleg „Konfigurationen des Films (GRK 2270)“ bis zu zwölf Promotionsstellen für eine_n
Wissenschaftliche_n Mitarbeiter_in (m/w/d)
(E13, 65%-Teilzeit)
zunächst befristet für die Dauer von 18 Monaten (mit Option der Verlängerung um weitere 18 Monate) zu besetzen. Die Eingruppierung richtet sich nach den Tätigkeitsmerkmalen des für die Goethe-Universität geltenden Tarifvertrages (TV-G-U).
Die Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main ist mit etwa 48.000 Studierenden und rund 5.000 Beschäftigten eine der größten Hochschulen in Deutschland. 1914 von Frankfurter Bürgern gegründet und seit 2008 wieder in der Rechtsform einer Stiftung besitzt die Goethe-Universität ein hohes Maß an Eigenständigkeit, Modernität und fachlicher Vielfalt. Als Volluniversität bietet die Goethe-Universität Frankfurt auf fünf Campus in insgesamt 16 Fachbereichen über 100 Studiengänge an und besitzt gleichzeitig eine herausragende Forschungsstärke.
Aufgabenbereich:
Konzipiert für die Zirkulation in unterschiedlichen Formaten und standardisiert im Hinblick auf globale Distribution, war der Film immer schon zugleich ein Bild der Bewegung und ein Bild in Bewegung. Die Entwicklung digitaler Produktionstechnologien und die Emergenz digitaler Kommunikationsnetzwerke haben im Verlauf der letzten Jahrzehnte der Mobilität des Films eine neue Dimension verliehen. Jenseits des klassischen Dispositivs des Kinos sind neue Formen und Bezugsrahmen des Kinos entstanden, welche die etablierten Ansätze der Filmwissenschaft in Frage stellen. Die drei Leitbegriffe Index, Dispositiv und Kanon, mit denen das Kino als photochemische Bildtechnologie mit einem privilegierten Realitätsbezug, als Ort der öffentlichen Vorführung und als national geprägte Auswahl von Autorenfilmen definiert wurde, können der neuen Vielfalt bewegter Bilder und ihren globalen Zirkulationswegen nicht mehr erschöpfend gerecht werden. Der Begriff der „post-kinematographischen Bedingung“, mit dem die Filmtheorie seit mehr als einem Jahrzehnt die neue kulturelle und technologische Ordnung des Films zu beschreiben versucht, hält mit einer fast melancholischen Verbundenheit an dem fest, was das Kino nicht mehr ist. Dagegen untersucht das Graduiertenkolleg „Konfigurationen des Films“ die Operationen, Formen und Formate sowie Orte und Infrastrukturen der Produktion und Distribution von Filmen. Das Forschungsprogramm erweitert den Horizont der Untersuchung über das Feld der Kunst und der Ästhetik hinaus und hält zugleich fest an der Vorstellung vom Film als einem privilegierten Ort der Produktion kultureller Bedeutung, des sozialen Handelns und der politischen Auseinandersetzung. Einstellungsvoraussetzungen:
Voraussetzung für eine erfolgreiche Bewerbung ist ein exzellenter Master- oder Magisterabschluss zu Beginn des Kollegs (1. Juli 2020) in Filmwissenschaft bzw. Medienwissenschaft oder in einer der weiteren beteiligten oder in benachbarten Disziplinen (v.a. Amerikanistik, Musikwissenschaft, Philosophie und Theaterwissenschaft). Bewerber_innen sollten über hervorragende Kenntnisse in Englisch und mindestens eine weitere Fremdsprache (CEF B1) verfügen, vorzugsweise Französisch. Bewerber_innen, deren Muttersprache nicht Deutsch ist, sollten hervorragende Kenntnisse in Deutsch nachweisen (CEF C1).
Bewerber_innen sollten über die Fähigkeit zur Entwicklung einer eigenständigen wissenschaftlichen Fragestellung im Themengebiet des Kollegs verfügen. Sie sollen hochmotivierte Wissenschaftler_innen sein, die in der Lage sind, ihr Dissertationsprojekt innerhalb der Vertragszeit von drei Jahren abzuschließen.
„Konfigurationen des Films“ ist ein Forschungskollektiv und für Doktorand_innen besteht eine Präsenz- und Residenzpflicht. Die Anwesenheit von Doktorand_innen im Forschungsalltag ist ein wichtiger Bestandteil der Gemeinschaftsbildung und Professionalisierung, das die kontinuierliche und tiefgreifende Zusammenarbeit mit Kolleg_innen und Wissenschaftler_innen fördert. Doktorand_innen nehmen eine aktive Rolle im täglichen Betrieb des Kollegs ein. Sie sind vertreten in Ausschüssen und organisieren Veranstaltungen wie z.B. Konferenzen und Workshops, Lesegruppen und Gastvorlesungen, Filmvorführungen und Exkursionen. Die Präsenz- und Residenzpflicht ermöglicht Doktorand_innen sich als führende Kräfte in der Film-und Medienwissenschaft sowie in Frankfurt und seinem vielfältigen kulturellen Leben zu etablieren.
Die Bewerbungsunterlagen sollten neben Curriculum Vitae und Zeugniskopien namentlich ein Motivationsschreiben und eine Skizze des Promotionsvorhabens (2–3 Seiten plus Literaturliste) umfassen. Die Projektbeschreibung sollte deutlich machen, in welchem thematischen Zusammenhang das Projekt mit dem Thema des Kollegs steht, die eigene Fragestellung darstellen und methodische Fragen adressieren. Außerdem sollte sie den derzeitigen Stand des Projektes deutlich machen und einen Zeitplan beinhalten.

The German Research Foundation has awarded funding to the Research Training Group “Configurations of Film” (GRK 2279) housed at the Institute of Theater, Film and Media Studies at Goethe University. Starting on July 1st, 2020, up to twelve
PhD positions
(E13, 65% part time)
will be financed. The positions are limited to 18 months (with a possible extension for another 18 months). The salary grade is based on the job characteristics of the collective agreement applicable to Goethe University (TV-G-U).

Tasks:
Scalable across a variety of formats and standardized in view of global circulation almost from the beginning, the moving image has always been both an image of movement and an image on the move. Over the last three decades, digital production technologies, communication networks and distribution platforms have taken the scalability and mobility of film to a new level. Beyond the classical dispositive of the cinema, new forms and knowledge of cinema and film have emerged, challenging the established approaches to the study of film. The conceptual framework of index, dispositive and canon, which defined cinema as photochemical image technology with a privileged bond to reality, a site of public projection, and a set of works from auteurs from specific national origins, can no longer account for the current multitude of moving images and the trajectories of their global movements. The term “post-cinema condition,” which was first proposed by film theorists more than a decade ago to describe the new cultural and technological order of moving images, retained an almost melancholic attachment to that which the cinema no longer was. Moving beyond such attachments, the concept of “configurations of film” aims to account for moving images in terms of their operations, forms and formats, locations and infrastructures, expanding the field of cinematic knowledge beyond the arts and the aesthetic, while retaining a focus on film as a privileged site for the production of cultural meaning, for social action and for political conflict in the 21st century. Employment requirement:
Applicants for Ph.D. scholarships must hold a master’s degree in film studies, media studies or one of the other participating or related fields and disciplines (above all American Studies, Musicology, Philosophy and/or Theater Studies). Applicants should have their master’s degree in hand by the start date of the contract (July 1, 2020). Excellent written and spoken command of English is required. Applicants whose first language is not German must demonstrate proficiency in German (CEF C1), plus a basic knowledge (CEF B1) of one other language to be admitted to the program. Applicants should be capable of developing an original research question that contributes to the overall topic and concerns of the program. They should be self-motivated scholars who can conduct productive research and successfully complete a dissertation project based on their chosen topic within the three-year time frame of the contract.
“Configurations of Film” is a research collective and PhD candidates must complete their theses in residence in Frankfurt. We consider doctoral residency to be a substantial vehicle for community building and professionalisation that fosters sustained participation with peers and faculty in scholarly activities. PhD candidates take an active role in the day-to-day activities of the Kolleg. They will join committees and actively contribute to the organization of events such as conferences and workshops, reading groups and guest lectures, screening series and field trips. The residency allows PhD candidates to position themselves at the forefront of new original scholarship as well as within Frankfurt’s rich cultural scene.
